FLEX Global Youth Service Day (GYSD) Assistant 2013
Summary:
The FLEX alumni program, also sponsored by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs,
is administered by American Councils for International Education: ACTR/ACCELS. The GYSD
Assistant reports to the Eurasia FLEX Alumni Manager and is a part-time assistant from January
15, 2013 May 15, 2013 to assist with the GYSD Regional Partnership.
In 2012 the FLEX Alumni Program of American Councils was once again awarded a grant to
become a regional partner for GYSD 2013 (www.gysd.org). Now for the third, as a Regional
Partner, American Councils is one of ten organizations selected globally to receive a grant to
coordinate Eurasia-wide GYSD projects, promoting the idea that children and youth are assets and
resources to their communities. American Councils will work to engage young people in community
service, especially during Global Youth Service Day April 26-28, 2013.
Job responsibilities include:
● Disseminate information about Global Youth Service Day, including available resources,
grant opportunities, project support, and post-project reporting.
● Assist FLEX Alumni Program staff in adapting and/or translating available newsletters and
planning resources.
● Participate in regular regional calls with Youth Service America’s Manager of Outreach.
● Compile data to identify, select, and communicate with partner organizers.
● Assist the FLEX Alumni Program staff and 20 FLEX Alumni Coordinators in mobilizing
partners, youth organizations, and constituents to plan highly visible service GYSD projects
that engage a minimum of 10,000 youth volunteers (ages 5-25) across Eurasia. In 2012
American Councils reported on more than 11,500 young people participating in projects,
exceeding the target goal. In 2013 the GYSD assistant will help to match or surpass last
year’s participation goals.
● Assist alumni in engaging local media and public officials to participate in GYSD activities.
● Work with all Eurasian partners in posting projects on the GYSD.org map before GYSD
weekend.
● Assisting with the final reporting of GYSD activities carried out by FLEX alumni and other
partner organizations across Eurasia.
This position involves cooperative work with American Councils staff in the offices in Moscow,
Washington, D.C., and the 10 Eurasian countries in which the FLEX program is administered, as
well as with partner organizations and U.S. Embassies.
QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:
● Native Russian language and strong written and oral English language skills
● Excellent interpersonal skills
● Media and PR experience
● Demonstrated organizational ability, attention to detail and problem-solving skills
● Advanced MS Office skills, knowledge of social networking sites
● Candidates must be available to begin work in mid January 2013 through May 2013
