  • Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission—(Abbreviated TRMM.) A joint scientific satellite project between the United States and Japan designed to monitor and study tropical rainfall and the associated release of energy to the atmosphere.
The TRMM instrument package includes the first spaceborne precipitation radar, the TRMM microwave imager, a visible and infrared scanner, a cloud and earth radiant energy system, and a lightning imaging sensor. The TRMM satellite was successfully launched from the Tanegashima Space Center in Japan on 27 November 1997.
  • tropical rainy climate—A major category (the A climates) in W. Köppen's 1936 climatic classification; in order to be so classified, a climate must have these two characteristics: 1) the mean temperature of the coldest month must be 18°C (64.4°F) or higher, separating it from temperate rainy climates; 2) the annual precipitation must be in excess of a certain amount to distinguish it from dry climates (see formulas under steppe climate).
The three principal types of climate included in this category are the tropical rain forest climate, tropical savanna climate, and tropical monsoon climate
Köppen, W. P., and R. Geiger, 1930–1939: Handbuch der Klimatologie, Berlin: Gebruder Borntraeger, 6 vols
  • tropical savanna climate—In general, the type of climate that produces the vegetation of the tropical and subtropical savanna; thus, a climate with a winter dry season, a relatively short but heavy summer rainy season, and high year-round temperatures.
  • tropical stormSee tropical cyclone.
  • tropical upper-tropospheric trough—A semipermanent trough extending east-northeast to west- southwest from about 35°N in the eastern Pacific to about 15°–20°N in the central west Pacific.
A similar structure exists over the Atlantic Ocean, where the mean trough extends from Cuba toward Spain.

  • tropical wet and dry climate—Same as tropical savanna climate.
  • tropical wet climate—Same as tropical rain forest climate.
  • Tropical Wind Energy Conversion and Reference Level Experiment—(Abbreviated TWERLE.) An observing system utilizing lightweight balloons to record weather data that were transmitted through Nimbus-6, launched in June 1975, to a ground station.
  • tropical year—The time that it takes the sun to travel from one vernal equinox to the next.
  • Tropics—1. Any portion of the earth characterized by a tropical climate. 2. Same as Torrid Zone.
See Tropic of Cancer, Tropic of Capricorn.
