cross-spectrumThe Fourier transform of the cross correlation of two functions.
cross totals indexSee stability index.
cross-valley windA wind that blows across the longitudinal axis of a valley from one sidewall to another. This term is usually applied to a thermally driven (anabatic or katabatic) wind arising when unequal insolation on the two sidewalls causes a strong cross-valley temperature difference. Air then flows toward the more strongly heated sidewall. See mountain–valley wind systems.
crossover experimentWeather modification experiment designed to involve two areas, only one of which is seeded at a time, with the area for seeding being randomly selected for each time period.
crosswind gustinessSee gustiness components.
crosswindA wind that has a component directed perpendicularly to the course (or heading) of an exposed, moving object; more popularly, a wind that predominantly acts in this manner. In the broadest sense, any wind except a direct headwind or direct tailwind is a crosswind. The drift produced by crosswind is critical to air navigation, being especially dangerous during landing and takeoff.
crosswise vorticityThe component of the vorticity vector that is perpendicular to the flow velocity vector. See also streamwise vorticity, helicity.
CRTAbbreviation for cathode-ray tube.
cryochoreA region of perpetual snow. See biochore.
cryoconite holeA small pit in an ice surface produced by the sinking of a particle of dust of cosmic origin (known as cryoconite, a fine-grained dark-colored substance).
