  • cross-spectrum—The Fourier transform of the cross correlation of two functions.
  • cross totals indexSee stability index.
  • cross-valley wind—A wind that blows across the longitudinal axis of a valley from one sidewall to another.
This term is usually applied to a thermally driven (anabatic or katabatic) wind arising when unequal insolation on the two sidewalls causes a strong cross-valley temperature difference. Air then flows toward the more strongly heated sidewall. See mountain–valley wind systems.
  • crossover experimentWeather modification experiment designed to involve two areas, only one of which is seeded at a time, with the area for seeding being randomly selected for each time period.
  • crosswind gustinessSee gustiness components.
  • crosswind—A wind that has a component directed perpendicularly to the course (or heading) of an exposed, moving object; more popularly, a wind that predominantly acts in this manner.
In the broadest sense, any wind except a direct headwind or direct tailwind is a crosswind. The drift produced by crosswind is critical to air navigation, being especially dangerous during landing and takeoff.
  • crosswise vorticity—The component of the vorticity vector that is perpendicular to the flow velocity vector.
    See also streamwise vorticity, helicity.
  • CRT—Abbreviation for cathode-ray tube.
  • cryochore—A region of perpetual snow.
    See biochore.
  • cryoconite hole—A small pit in an ice surface produced by the sinking of a particle of dust of cosmic origin (known as cryoconite, a fine-grained dark-colored substance).
