  • Student's t-test—(Also called t test.) A significance test applicable to a sample mean of a sample estimate of a regression coefficient or a correlation coefficient (the latter only when the hypothetical value is zero).
It is used to test an assumed value of the corresponding parameter. It is also applicable to the comparison of two (but not more than two) sample means or two regression coefficients, but not of two correlation coefficients. The t test has different formulas for different uses.
  • sturmpause—Same as foehn pause.
  • Stüve diagramSee thermodynamic diagram.
  • suahiliSee ghibli.
  • subantarctic front—The northern front of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current that separates the polar frontal zone in the south from the subantarctic zone in the north.
It is characterized by sea surface temperatures near 7°–9°C and a salinity minimum of 33.8– 34.0 psu produced by high rainfall.
  • Subantarctic Mode WaterSee mode water.
  • Subantarctic Upper Water—The water mass of the subantarctic zone.
It has a temperature of 4°–10°C in winter (August) and 4°–14°C in summer (January) and a salinity of 33.9–34.9 psu in winter, which can decrease to 33.0 in summer from the melting of ice.
  • subantarctic zone—The region between the subantarctic front and the subtropical front.
  • subarctic climate—Same as taiga climate.
  • subarctic current—Same as Aleutian Current.
