Digital Product Managers

New York Media is seeking two innovative, hands-on Product Managers to help define features and analyze market opportunities for its growing suite of digital properties, including NYMag, Grubstreet, Vulture and The Cut. The properties span varied content areas, from politics to sports, with deep verticals in entertainment, fashion, and food.

Product managers will work in small Agile teams with designers, developers, editors, and project managers to build world-class digital products (websites, apps and mobile products). The position will be responsible for gathering and documenting requirements from consumers, business owners, editors, and other members of the product development team; prioritizing a backlog of features and building aggressive release plans; keeping business owners apprised about progress; writing use cases, business logic, and training documentation; defining acceptance criteria; and helping to test new products and train business owners. In addition, Product Managers will regularly assess and report on competitive properties, partnership opportunities and new technologies.

One of the Product Manager positions will focus on building a rich, immersive fashion/beauty site. Applicants should be passionate about creating innovative, editorially-driven products and have a minimum of seven years experience working on product development teams for consumer-focused digital properties. Ideal candidates will have a worked a minimum of five years as a product manager, information architect, or web developer. Strong communication skills and a deep understanding of web development technologies are essential.

The other Product Manager position will focus on more technical projects including business-facing tools, the continual expansion/evolution of our content management system, content migration, API development, the membership systems, and our mobile/web listings products (restaurants, bars, stores, etc.). While working closely with the editorial teams to identify ways to improve workflow, content production, and data management, the Product Manager will work equally closely with developers to document requirements for APIs, taxonomies, and content entry forms. A software engineering background and experience working with online editorial publications are highly desirable. Applicants must have at least seven years experience as a product manager or web developer.

Both positions require creative, passionate and tech-savvy leaders with strong organization and communication skills, as well as the ability to build strong working partnerships with editors, developers and designers. Candidates should be team players with a record of success in launching compelling products.

The positions will report to the Executive Director of Product Development.

Design Positions

Senior Interaction Designer

NYMag.com is looking for a talented senior designer to join our user experience team. The Senior Designer will have the opportunity to take a lead role in diverse projects with a talented group of designers, front end engineers, developers, and product owners.

Candidates will be expected to produce effective and creative solutions to a variety of design challenges, successfully translating them into meaningful solutions that exhibit stylistic breadth, balance innovation and usability, and maintain and evolve the visual and user experience standards of New York on the web. Candidates must have the ability to collaborate across teams, working closely with editorial, product, technology, sales, marketing, and production departments. Candidates must also demonstrate expertise for design, typography, and composition when designing for web products as well as a deep understanding of web design best practices.

Responsibilities:

  • Conceive and execute highly effective visual designs for new website features and mobile applications
  • Collaborate with user experience designers, art directors, product owners, and editors to develop successful design strategies.
  • Collaborate with front- and back-end developers to implement design solutions.

Requirements:

  • 4+ years experience with interaction design
  • A curiosity and passion for web design, web history, emerging technologies, etc
  • Expertise with industry standard design software
  • Solid understanding of HTML and CSS, with a clear understanding as to how designs translate to code
  • Highly organized, thorough, and detail oriented, with excellent problem-solving skills
  • Ability to balance multiple projects over varying delivery dates
  • Self-motivated and able to produce results independently as well as in a team environment
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Firm grasp of the roles of typography, photography, and illustration in editorial web design

UI Engineer

With a top-of-the-line 27" iMac? New York Media is seeking a UI Engineer to join our elite UX Development team &emdash; the front-end masters of NYMag.com, Vulture, and Grub Street. This position is full-time and based at our SoHo office in New York, NY.

Responsibilities:

  • Work with Designers and Software Engineers to create and build next generation products
  • Write code that pushes the limits of modern browsers while degrading gracefully for the older ones*

Senior Project Manager / ScrumMaster

The Senior Project Manager's primary responsibilities include a successful execution of the Agile process within the organization and managing launch schedules with aggressive yet realistic deadlines. This involves education, training/coaching, evangelizing, and, when necessary, evolving the process itself to help our teams be as effective as they can be. The SPM will also produce reports that track progress and give insight to the executive team on our product development progress. The role will work closely and collaboratively with the Product Managers, the CTO, and the Design Director to resource teams, help manage scope, report on progress, and identify risks. With several teams each pursuing their own projects, effective resource allocation and prioritization will be essential to leading the teams through successive product launches. Most importantly, within a broader project schedule, the SPM will make sure all projects in the organization have clear milestones on which team members and business owners are focused.

The Senior Project Manager will oversee his/her own projects while also managing at least one other ScrumMaster. Project managers run scrum and release planning meetings, proactively identify issues with hitting sprint commitments early enough to make a difference, work closely with team members to eliminate (and identify) blockers, help resolve conflicts, help track product backlogs, assist with QA, follow up and prioritize bugs with QA engineers, set up meetings/demos, write training documentation, conduct training sessions, and alert management and team members to risks. Project managers should understand the project requirements as well as any member of the team and work across the organization to execute the project.

Candidates should be able to lead and motivate team members, fostering collaboration and creativity. Some projects will be highly technical and, to be effective, the PM must be able to understand web development frameworks and technical issues enough to drive the team to smart decisions and to anticipate possible risks/issues surrounding approaches.

Qualifications:

  • At least 5 years project management experience working on Web products; at least 2 years working as a ScrumMaster in an Agile environment
  • Strong leadership and communication skills.

Experience with:

  • Scrum and other Agile methodologies and software engineering practices, as well as traditional waterfall approaches.
  • Managing Projects involving web site launches, content management systems, data warehousing, systems integration, or other large technology implementations.
  • Managing mobile app and mobile web development projects is a plus.
  • Expertise in an online businesses environment.
  • Working with software developers, designers, department heads, product owners and QA teams.
  • Management of vendor relationships.

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent, minimum.

Integrated Research Manager

New York Media is looking for an experienced Integrated Research Manager to support the company's ongoing innovation and expansion from an ad sales perspective.

Requirements:

Seeking candidates with 3-5 years experience in digital audience research (primarily ad sales, with some exposure to web analytics required to collaborate with an analytics manager in the company's audience development group). Proficiency in Omniture SiteCatalyst and Discover (or a similar web analytics suite) is required, in addition to solid skills in a majority of the following tools (or their competitors): ComScore MediaMetrix, Flurry, Telmar, MMR, Aperture, Google Analytics and Quantcast. Basic knowledge of PowerPoint, Keynote or Custom Show presentation software is also required. The ideal candidate possesses the ability to thoroughly analyze data, draw actionable conclusions and weave those results into the sales narratives of the company's brands for B2B messaging to the advertising community. Our fast-paced environment requires a team player who is able to self-start and own projects in a busy pipeline and understand the customer service role of research in a specialized ad sales organization. An Excel dynamo w/ multi-brand experience and exposure to social media and the teen market is a plus.

NYMag.com is seeking a blogger to cover the evening shift on Daily Intel and Vulture, Sunday through Thursday, 9 pm - 1 am. Experience with blogging and excellent writing skills are a must, with an emphasis on news judgment, speed, reliability, and the ability to channel the Intel / Vulture voice. The position calls for four to five posts on each blog every night, covering late-breaking developments and finding the news that everyone will be talking about next morning.
