Senior Interaction Designer

NYMag.com is looking for a talented senior designer to join our user experience team. The Senior Designer will have the opportunity to take a lead role in diverse projects with a talented group of designers, front end engineers, developers, and product owners.

Candidates will be expected to produce effective and creative solutions to a variety of design challenges, successfully translating them into meaningful solutions that exhibit stylistic breadth, balance innovation and usability, and maintain and evolve the visual and user experience standards of New York on the web. Candidates must have the ability to collaborate across teams, working closely with editorial, product, technology, sales, marketing, and production departments. Candidates must also demonstrate expertise for design, typography, and composition when designing for web products as well as a deep understanding of web design best practices.

Responsibilities:

  • Conceive and execute highly effective visual designs for new website features and mobile applications
  • Collaborate with user experience designers, art directors, product owners, and editors to develop successful design strategies.
  • Collaborate with front- and back-end developers to implement design solutions.

Requirements:

  • 4+ years experience with interaction design
  • A curiosity and passion for web design, web history, emerging technologies, etc
  • Expertise with industry standard design software
  • Solid understanding of HTML and CSS, with a clear understanding as to how designs translate to code
  • Highly organized, thorough, and detail oriented, with excellent problem-solving skills
  • Ability to balance multiple projects over varying delivery dates
  • Self-motivated and able to produce results independently as well as in a team environment
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Firm grasp of the roles of typography, photography, and illustration in editorial web design

UI Engineer

Are you passionate about design, user experience and front-end technology? Want to work with award-winning entertainment, fashion and local content enjoyed by millions of people? With a quad-core 27" iMac? New York Media is seeking a UI Engineer to join our elite UX Development team – the front-end masters of NYMag.com, Vulture, Grub Street and MenuPages. This position is full-time and is based at our Soho office in New York, NY.

Responsibilities:

  • Work with Designers and Software Engineers to create and build next generation products
  • Write code that pushes the limits of modern browsers while degrading gracefully for the older ones*
  • Identify and address performance bottlenecks
  • Champion best practices for front-end development

Requirements:

  • Advanced experience with front-end technologies (HTML/CSS/JavaScript)
  • Experience with scripting languages (Python, JSP, etc.) and related frameworks
  • Extreme attention to detail, driving for pixel perfection
  • Expert knowledge of OO JavaScript programming with and without frameworks (we use jQuery)

IA/UX Designer

New York Media—publisher of New York Magazine, NYMag.com, Vulture.com, and Grubstreet.com—is looking for a creative, seasoned information architect with a minimum of five years experience to join its UX Team. The IA will help define how our network of consumer-oriented media websites, apps, and mobile products will evolve. The position will work closely with product owners, designers and developers to articulate product vision, wireframe concepts, diagram workflow, shape informational hierarchies, design interaction models, and shepherd products through visual design and development.

Responsibilities:

  • The primary responsibility of the IA is to wireframe concepts for new products and work with edit, design, front-end and backend developers to refine/validate concepts being wireframed. Products may range from a new article template to a search experience to a mobile app UI to an update to our membership system.
  • The IA will create low-fidelity and high-fidelity wireframes illustrating the new products.
  • The IA is also responsible for diagramming workflow and production tools to support new products. This involves driving user acceptance from business owners based on their needs.
  • Oversee realization of a full set of logical design materials appropriate to a given project. Act as primary user advocate across NY Media products, including advertising
  • Oversee the consistent definition, implementation, and evolution of smart UX patterns and interaction models.
  • Play a flexible role across our products: sometimes as primary UX designer on your own project, sometimes as UX consultant to others.
  • Stay current with advancements in interactive technology and competitive or complimentary products, and advocate for the appropriate application of those advancements in our own products.
  • Identify and create opportunities for user feedback in the development of new and existing features.
  • Run or direct usability testing as appropriate.

Ideal Candidate Profile

As a candidate, you must have facility in crafting experiences that meet equally well the needs of users/readers, editorial tone/identity, and business goals. You are equal parts product-thinker, information architect, interaction designer, and usability professional. You communicate and collaborate well with software architects and developers. You realize that the ideal first release of a product is one that may not include all the features the business wants but works better than the audience expects. You are familiar with the capabilities/best practices of HTML 5 and iOS. You care deeply about the details while always keeping the big picture in mind.

  • A minimum of five years in the field of user experience design, including at least two years experience with media/editorial products.

Assistant Production Manager

New York Magazine is seeking experienced magazine production designer to traffic client supplied ads, create magazine page layouts, design ads, some web ad design, create & update promotional materials. Create hi-res ads, and work with sales, production staffs to submit files for printing. Should be experienced in InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, CustomShow, QuarkxPress, and printing and magazine publishing protocols. Atex Adbase pagination, ADBOOKER, FTP protocols, Excel, Powerpoint a plus.

Web Technology & Development Positions

Chief Technology Officer, Digital Media Group

New York Media is seeking an experienced, passionate technology expert to lead all digital media technology initiatives at a growing company. The Chief Technology Officer, Digital Media Group will oversee a team of software and QA engineers, systems administrators and project managers tasked with building and maintaining multiple award-winning websites and digital applications. The CTO is responsible for providing technology leadership for the staff, establishing best practices for application development and website operations and fostering a creative, energetic environment in which developers are inspired to build innovative media products for a consumer audience and smart, efficient content management tools for a growing internal team. The CTO is a member of the top leadership team of the Digital Media Group and helps set strategy for the growth and development of New York Media's digital initiatives.

The ideal candidate will be able to operate successfully at both the detailed tactical and strategic levels – digging deep into our software code to help developers spot problems and find solutions, but also helping senior company managers drive smart strategic decisions about technology platforms and digital opportunities.

Candidates must have experience managing application development teams and operating high-user volume websites. Candidates must also have hands-on experience creating software applications using dynamic programming languages. The ability to clearly communicate technology issues and options to non-technologists is essential, as is the ability to understand business needs and find smart, efficient technology solutions. Experience leading teams that use agile product development methodology is highly desired.

Responsibilities:

  • Manage a team of front end and back end software engineers, QA engineers, systems administrators and project managers responsible for technology development and operations of New York Media's digital properties, including nymag.com, vulture.com, grubstreet.com, menupages.com and several iOS and Android applications.
  • Work with the General Manager, Digital Media and key digital department heads to develop the digital product and platform strategy for New York Media
  • Oversee the design, development, testing and documentation of software applications
  • Collaborate with the product development and design teams in developing and executing new site features and applications
  • Work with product development to translate product goals into achievable technology solutions with realistic product roadmaps
  • Architect software solutions that are secure, scalable, extensible and maintainable
  • Oversee the agile product development process
  • Establish and enforce SDLC best practices
  • Oversee datacenter operations
  • Oversee external on-shore and off-shore contractor resources as needed and act as technical liaison for communicating requirements to these teams
  • Work with the General Manager, Digital Media to manage the digital media technology budget

Requirements:

  • At least 10 years experience in software development, with at least 5 years experience in web application development
  • At least 5 years managing a software engineering team
  • Demonstrated Java development skills, with strong dynamic programming language experience (such as Python or Ruby) and OO fundamentals
  • Solid understanding of Apache operations and integration (particularly Apache in a Linux/Unix environment)
  • Deep understanding of load-balancing required
  • Experience designing and developing high performance applications in a fail-safe "zero downtime" environment
  • Experience architecting scalable websites, application tuning, building to standards, and system automation
  • Experience working with open-source tools and applications
  • Deep knowledge of and experience with front-end development and performance best practices
  • Strong organizational, problem-solving and communications skills – able to clearly communicate technical issues to non-technical stakeholders
  • Experience with enterprise applications and services from Day Software, Endeca, Omniture and Doubleclick highly desirable
  • Experience in digital media or advertising highly desirable
  • Experience developing software applications using the agile methodology highly desirable
  • Ability to work in a rapidly changing environment and exhibit grace under pressure
  • Ability to work independently with no hand-holding

Public Relations Intern

Unpaid intern needed for the fall semester for 3-5 days per week to assist the Public Relations department. Great opportunity for anyone looking to break into public relations or magazine publishing. Intern must be able to receive school credit.

The intern will be expected to:

  • Help with daily and weekly press packet compilation and distribution.
  • Manage, organize, and grow lists of media contacts.
  • Plan, staff, and attend occasional evening events for the magazine.
