Senior Interaction Designer

NYMag.com is looking for a talented senior designer to join our user experience team. The Senior Designer will have the opportunity to take a lead role in diverse projects with a talented group of designers, front end engineers, developers, and product owners.

Candidates will be expected to produce effective and creative solutions to a variety of design challenges, successfully translating them into meaningful solutions that exhibit stylistic breadth, balance innovation and usability, and maintain and evolve the visual and user experience standards of New York on the web. Candidates must have the ability to collaborate across teams, working closely with editorial, product, technology, sales, marketing, and production departments. Candidates must also demonstrate expertise for design, typography, and composition when designing for web products as well as a deep understanding of web design best practices.

Responsibilities:

  • Conceive and execute highly effective visual designs for new website features and mobile applications
  • Collaborate with user experience designers, art directors, product owners, and editors to develop successful design strategies.
  • Collaborate with front- and back-end developers to implement design solutions.

Requirements:

  • 4+ years experience with interaction design
  • A curiosity and passion for web design, web history, emerging technologies, etc
  • Expertise with industry standard design software
  • Solid understanding of HTML and CSS, with a clear understanding as to how designs translate to code

UI Engineer

IA/UX Designer

New York Media—publisher of New York Magazine, NYMag.com, Vulture.com, and Grubstreet.com—is looking for a creative, seasoned information architect with a minimum of five years experience to join its UX Team. The IA will help define how our network of consumer-oriented media websites, apps, and mobile products will evolve. The position will work closely with product owners, designers and developers to articulate product vision, wireframe concepts, diagram workflow, shape informational hierarchies, design interaction models, and shepherd products through visual design and development.

Responsibilities:

  • The primary responsibility of the IA is to wireframe concepts for new products and work with edit, design, front-end and backend developers to refine/validate concepts being wireframed. Products may range from a new article template to a search experience to a mobile app UI to an update to our membership system.
  • The IA will create low-fidelity and high-fidelity wireframes illustrating the new products.
  • The IA is also responsible for diagramming workflow and production tools to support new products. This involves driving user acceptance from business owners based on their needs.
  • Oversee realization of a full set of logical design materials appropriate to a given project. Act as primary user advocate across NY Media products, including advertising
  • Oversee the consistent definition, implementation, and evolution of smart UX patterns and interaction models.
  • Play a flexible role across our products: sometimes as primary UX designer on your own project, sometimes as UX consultant to others.
  • Stay current with advancements in interactive technology and competitive or complimentary products, and advocate for the appropriate application of those advancements in our own products.
  • Identify and create opportunities for user feedback in the development of new and existing features.
  • Run or direct usability testing as appropriate.

Ideal Candidate Profile

As a candidate, you must have facility in crafting experiences that meet equally well the needs of users/readers, editorial tone/identity, and business goals. You are equal parts product-thinker, information architect, interaction designer, and usability professional. You communicate and collaborate well with software architects and developers. You realize that the ideal first release of a product is one that may not include all the features the business wants but works better than the audience expects. You are familiar with the capabilities/best practices of HTML 5 and iOS. You care deeply about the details while always keeping the big picture in mind.

Events Positions

Special Events Director, New York Media

The Special Events Director in the Creative Services Department of New York Media heads the events team responsible for producing and managing signature event programs, merchandising and editorial events, client entertaining events, sponsorships, and partnerships.

Key Characteristics

Strong managerial and leadership skills required. Highly developed analytical skills are a must. Multitasking is a required skill. Attention to detail is critical, as well as strong communication skills. Lastly, the candidate must possess a high level of energy and commitment, teamwork skills, problem solving and writing ability, as well as a proficiency in Microsoft Excel.

Responsibilities:

Leading the team to develop and implement event plans including (but not limited to) the following areas:

  • Management: Mentor, oversee and aid in the development of the Special Events Manager.
  • Budgeting: P&L; creation and reconciliation; invoice approval and processing.
  • Vendors: Manage and negotiate with vendors.
  • Timelines: Generate production schedules; manage deadlines; handle client updates and approvals.

Ability to identify venues and organizations that are aligned with the New York brand and our advertisers.

Develop sales packages, marketing plans, P&Ls;, oversee sales processes and execution of programs with event, merchandising and promotion staff.

Work with Creative Services Director and Art Director to establish branding and all promotional elements for all special events.

NYMag.com is seeking a part-time freelance design and production artist to assist with various production- and design-related tasks on all of nymag.com's online properties.

Responsibilities:

  • Preparing print magazine assets for our weekly online publish—cropping photos, reconfiguring complex designs, charts, maps, building slideshows, etc)

Quality Assurance Engineer

New York Media, owner of New York Magazine, nymag.com, and menupages.com, is looking for a proactive quality assurance engineer who is a consummate team player and thrives in a fast-paced web environment. The ideal candidate must be detail-oriented, well organized with a blend of technical and analytical skills, proactive, and able to work independently, including the ability to make judgment calls and respond tactfully in all situations.

Responsibilities:

  • Implement quality assurance tests.
  • Work on the occasional weekend or late-night release of a product or feature to fully QA prior to launch.
  • Analyze and document the existing web projects for nymag.com and menupages.com.
  • Ensure compliance with general programming best practices, accepted web standards, and those standards set forth by upstream sources.
  • Implement application regression tests; translate product requirements into test scripts; create test scripts from scratch (interview developers and other resources to refine scripts); other deliverables.

  • 2+ years experience designing and implementing quality assurance testing procedures.

  • Strong ability to understand and translate product goals and strategies into discernible test scripts.
  • Experience producing expansive technical documentation.
