The UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) was established under the United Nations Charter as the principal organ to coordinate economic, social, and related work of the 14 UN specialized agencies, 10 functional commissions and five regional commissions. The Council also receives reports from 11 UN funds and programmes. It serves as the central forum for discussing international economic and social issues, and for formulating policy recommendations addressed to Member States and the United Nations system. |

The total value of contributions received by the United Nations system for
operational activities in 2007 amounted to $19.1 billion. This total represents an
increase of 11 per cent in nominal terms, and an increase of 2.4 per cent in real
terms, over the contributions received in 2006. The expenditures of the United
Nations system for operational activities in 2007 amounted to $17.3 billion.
