World unites to halt death and injury on roads

WHO

6 May 2011 -- Almost 1.3 million people die each year on the world's roads, making this the ninth leading cause of death globally. In addition, road crashes cause between 20 million and 50 million non-fatal injuries every year. As part of the Decade of Action for Road Safety 2011-2020, governments commit to take new steps to save lives on their roads.

5 May 2011 -- Proper hand hygiene is one of the most simple and effective ways to reduce health care-associated infections, which affect hundreds of millions of patients every year. However, about 60% of health workers do not always follow best hand hygiene practices. For the third consecutive year, WHO is raising global awareness about hand hygiene in patient care to reduce the known burden of these infections.

3 May 2011 -- Headache disorders, including migraine and tension-type headache, are among the most prevalent disorders; studies estimate that half to three quarters of adults have had headache in the last year. WHO's Atlas of headache disorders and resources in the world 2011 presents data from 101 countries, covering 86% of the world’s population. The Atlas documents inadequacies in the response to these conditions globally.
