Second World War : Dig For Victory - The Ministry Of Food And The Battle To Feed Wartime Britain 1940 - 1944
This DVD companion to the Imperial War Museum's Second World War "Ministry Of Food" Exhibition is the definitive compilation of their own film archive's holdings on every stage of the food chain; food production, preparation and consumption. It affords a very detailed insight into the logistical struggle to feed the British during the dark days of war; both fighting servicemen and civilians on the home front. The Ministry Of Food had the unenviable task of keeping the public constantly aware of the shortage of food as ships containing much needed imports were a constant target for the Luftwaffe and the German Navy. It was imperative that the nation endeavored to self-sufficiency as far as was practicable and these films encourage the British public's positive adaptation to the privations of shortages and rationing with an emphasis on how to be frugal and inventive on the 'Kitchen Front', on avoiding waste, on reducing imports through the promotion of 'seasonal' produce and fool-proof instructional films on how to grow one's own food. The WVS and 'Food Flying Squads' leapt into nightly action during the 'Blitz' to feed the wardens, rescue teams, firemen and civilians who had been bombed out of their homes. Communal dining in a chain of 'British Restaurants' helped ration coupons to go further. The Ministry of Information used many star names from the theatre and variety revues of the time such as Tommy Trinder, Ted Ray, Ronald Shiner, Arthur Haynes, Charlie Chester, Jimmy Handley, John Slater, Ralph Richardson, and Hubert Gregg.

Second World War : British Tanks Of The Second World War
Watch a trailer from this release!

Over 2 hours in length - British Tanks Of The Second World War is the definitive archive film documentary tracing the development of British Tanks from the Tog 1 at the outset of war to the Comet at the end of hostilities through a never ending cycle of improvements to meet the joint challenges of firepower, manoeuvrability and crew protection. The Germans started World War Two with the deadly advantage of having developed a formidable Panzer Force both in terms of their tanks' mechanical superiority and the integrated Panzer Divisions preparations for their deployment. The British tanks by contrast were basic, unimaginative throwbacks to the crude designs of the Great War. Tanks were needed to smash through defences and enemy lines, to destroy gun positions and to isolate and paralyse the enemy in minimal time. As the war progressed relentlessy across Northern Europe British Tanks met the challenge of the heavier German Tanks by successfully mating the 17 Pdr Gun to the Sherman Tank creating the tank destroying Firefly.

Other adaptations to tanks included the ability to 'swim' and lay bridges -helping to maintain the flow of armour into the heart of the Reich. British Tanks Of The Second World War is the fascinating story of the design triumphs and adaptations that turned around the mismanagement, underproduction and technical inferiority of British tanks at the beginning of the war into a fearsome strike force that outfought the Panzer divisions and paved the way for Victory! Beach Obstacles(1943, 31 minutes) -A fascinating silent film illustrating the many ways adapted tanks can be employed to overcome passive beach defences -walls, wire-filled gullies, concrete 'egg' obstacles, steel tubes etc. Includes images of Churchill tanks with 'Carpet' laying equipment enabling troops to cross areas of densely packed barbed wire and customised Convenanter and Matilda with a variety of explosive charges. www.cherryred.co.uk

UXB - Unexploded Bombs On The British Home Front 1941-1944
sn6672

Second World War : UXB - Unexploded Bombs On The British Home Front 1941-1944
Released on 26/07/10. A collection of three original wartime instructional films about the hazards faced - and the methods employed - in the identification, reporting and defusing of a whole range of German unexploded bombs in a variety of challenging locations on the British Home Front. The stakes were high - civilians feared for their lives and their homes and one false move by the bomb disposal men could result in instant death and widespread destruction.

UXB (1941, 58 minutes) An investigation into the complexities of the tasks facing ARP wardens and wartime bomb disposal squads in their reconnaissance, reporting, prioritising and categorising of home front UXB incidents. How they look for traces of blast and examine the bomb's crater to discern whether it is a UXB scenario. We see the variety of German bombs extant in 1941 and how to identify them by the parts that might be found at a bomb site - tail fins, tail drums, cones, kopf rings, carrying bands and lugs. The further complications of the variety of fuses - impact, instant, delay action, booby trap, anti-handling - are also investigated in the context of defusing them with due regard to the civilian populations of the cities of wartime Britain.

Techniques Of Bomb Disposal (1942, 108 minutes) A previously unrelased feature length dramatised documentary in which a bomb disposal squad headed by "Mr Ambrose" tackle a number of UXB scenarios in differing London locations - a 1000Kg bomb in Victoria Park, a 50Kg bomb in Richmond Park and a very delicate operation defusing a bomb lodged near the foundations of a factory crucial to the war effort. The intricacies of shaft and trench construction are shown and there's a fascinating look at the tools of fuse neutralisation by means of the 'clockstopper' - a heavy duty electromagnet and the 'steriliser' - a steam generator that melts out the main charge.

Butterfly Bomb (1944, 2 minutes) A recognition film about the anti-personnel 'butterfly bomb' explaining how to idenitfy them with or without their wings and the procedures to follow on discovering them including the sandbagging technique.

Returning from Hollywood to England in 1943, Alfred Hitchcock made two French-language propaganda films for the Ministry of Information. Though neither contains a cameo appearance by the director, these fascinating short films are full of Hitchcockian flourishes which - along with their inherent rarity - make them a key addition to any collection.

Bon Voyage (1944, 25 mins, French language with English Subtitles)

RAF Sergeant Dougall, freshly escaped from France, is debriefed by a Free French Deuxième Bureau officer in London. Dougall recounts how he - along with Stephan, a fellow escapee - contacted the resistance in Rheims, where he won the only available place in a plane pick-up. Dougall is surprised to find out that the officer is aware of a letter that Stephan has asked him to post in London. Bigger surprises are in store, however, when Dougall is told the full story.

Aventure Malgache (1944, 30 mins, French language with English Subtitles)

After Petain's historic broadcast in June 1940, the citizens of Madagascar gather to offer resistance to the Germans, but Michel persuades them to await Petain's orders. Clarus, an active resister, is betrayed and sentenced to life imprisonment. Michel - who is not what he seems - attempts to make a deal with him in order to discover the whereabouts of the resisters' transmitters and their code...
