ITN Roving Report Railways Of The World The 1960s

Railway History : ITN Roving Report Railways Of The World The 1960s
In the late 1950s and early 1960s, ITN filmed a series of news items abroad called 'Roving Report'; most have never been seen since their initial broadcast. The period covered by this DVD was a time of intense transition for railways the world over. From in-depth studies of rail systems in Europe to unique and unusual services around the globe - this is ITN ROVING REPORT : RAILWAYS OF THE WORLD : The 1960s

Other People’s Railways (1963, 13 mins)
With the Beeching Report, Britain was faced with the question of modernisation and rationalisation of its extensive railway network. Roving Report made a comparative analysis of how different countries rail networks coped with the changes in technology and in demand for their services. In France, we board the Mistral Express and, in Japan, the 'Dream Train'. An in depth look at Holland, where over two-thirds of its stations were shut, concludes the overview.
French Railways (1968, 18 mins)
An in depth study of the French Railways, following the journey of the fastest electric train of the day, Le Mistral, on its journey from Paris to Dijon. With interviews with staff and English passengers, we are treated to a fascinating comparison with British Rail.
The Tyrol – With a Twist (1963, 13 mins)
Michael Barlsey journeys from Victoria Station to the Austrian ski slopes via the unusual and quirky “Snow Sing” train service. With loud music piped into the compartments and a dance carriage where passengers “do the twist” on board all day and night, this is a trip not to be forgotten!
Railway To The Moon (1961, 15 mins)
A fascinating study of the astonishing railway in Peru that climbs the Andes mountains, built in the late 19th Century. At its peak the railway is 3.5 miles above sea level, leading to a doctor on board having to give oxygen to its passengers. With amazing scenery from Lima and the mountains, we follow the whole extraordinary journey.

BONUS FEATURES
Mount Carmel By Underground - An Excerpt (1960, 3 mins)
A look at a trip on the only underground service in the Middle East, travelling up and down Mount Carmel.
Day Trip To Dieppe - An Excerpt (1960, 8 mins)
A wide range of characters take a day trip to France starting with a cup of tea and ending, more often than not, fast asleep on the return journey!
Easter Excursions (1961, 15 mins)
A look at the various options for an Easter trip to the continent, ranging from boats and trains to the rather unusual practice of flying your car over on an 'airbridge' chartered flight!
Journey Through Malaya - An Excerpt (1961, 4 mins)
Footage of the construction of a new rail system to help transport goods from mining operations in very difficult conditions in Malaya.
Whisky Train (1964, 4 mins)
A report from the Scottish Highlands following the transport of whisky barrels by train to the bottling plants. Such trains had become increasingly vulnerable to theft!

The watershed year for Britain's railways came in 1963 with the appointment of Dr. Richard Beeching to the British Railways Board and the publication of his controversial 'Beeching Plan'; its impact and his legacy on the railways is investigated in detail here. The definitive archive-film led history of the early years of Britain's nationalised rail network.

With Colin Divall - Professor of Railway Studies and Head of the Institute Of Railway Studies And Transport History at York University and the National Railway Museum.

Post-War, the 'Big Four' Railway companies struggled with a backlog of maintenance of permanent way, engines and rolling stock borne of the under-investment and acute demands made on them during the Second World War. The story of this time of intense and controversial change is told in definitive detail with archive fi lm, period newsreels and testimony and interviews with both railwaymen and railway historians.

Among the locomotives featured are the A4 Pacifi c Class, the First diesel-electric loco no. 10000, the BR standard Britannia class, 9F class 'Evening Star', the Deltic prototype, the Peak D1, D.M.U's, Warships, Westerns, the Blue Pullman and the Glasgow Blue Electrics.

Railway History
Steam in the Sixties
sn6550

Railway History : Steam in the Sixties
Kenneth Oldham MBE and his 16mm camera bore witness to a period of great change on British Railways that included the cessation of scheduled steam services. In this, steam's final decade, he filmed a great many working steam types including an impressive array of mainline steam express classes: ex-S.R. 'Merchant Navy' and 'West Country'/ 'Battle Of Britain' Class Pacifics, B.R. Standard Class 7 'Britannia's', ex-LNER Gresley-designed A1s, A3 'Pacifics' (including Flying Scotsman) and A4 'Pacifics' (including Mallard) as well as Black 5s, Green Arrow V2s and ex-Great Western Castles, Manors and Halls. Kenneth also filmed one-off rarities such as 'Gordon Highlander' and the last operating single, the Caledonian Railway 'No.123'.

The official 'Steam Ban' provided the impetus for a flurry of privately organised steam-hauled rail tours. The Flying Scotsman was the locomotive of choice for a great many of those featured, including the 'Great Central Tour', the 'Moorlands Special' and the 'Pegler Pullman'. Also covered are a great many other named tours, the highlights of which are 'The Solway Ranger Rail Tour', 'The Scottish Lowlander Tour', 'The Three Summit Tour', 'The Scarborough Limited' and the Gresley Society's 'London North Eastern Flier' as well as many 'final runs' of specific loco classes and 'Farewell To Steam' specials.

Other points of interest include shots at the Dillicar water troughs, scenes on the now defunct Ripon to Northallerton line and the old North British Line at Silloth.

Making this programme the definitive visual history of the last decade of mainline steam, many original newsreel stories are also interspersed within the chronology, giving unique insights into locomotives such as the 'Dominion Of Canada', 'Stepney', 'Clun Castle', 'Evening Star' and 'Invincible' - an industrial tank engine seen at work on the now dismantled Royal Aircraft Establishment railway line, which ran through the streets of Farnborough.
