CR: Private Sector Involvement in MDGs/Poverty Reduction

Akiko Ida from the World Health Organization in Geneva asked whether actors in the private sector at country level have been actively participating in the national policy process of MDGs, for example by formulating national goals and indicators. She asked for concerete examples as well as publications on the private sector involvement in social sector Goals (e.g. Health, education...). Members responded from Albania, Bulgaria, Malaysia and Uzbekistan, among others, pointing out that although outreach and engagement with the private sector is still in the initial stages, it is an expanding area. Members also shared some concrete examples that highlight initial attempts at co-operation, such as Albania CO, which recently fielded a mission to initiate a series of MDG-Business Outreach activities in support of the Global Compact. Bulgaria has also engaged the private sector through their network of over 90 companies under the Global Compact program, and suggested some guidelines for working with the private sector.

CR: PRSPs and MDGs Workshop - Sierra Leone

Harriet Matthews from Sierra Leone informed us that they are planning to have a workshop on the PRSP and the MDGs, in order for the MDGs to have an impact at the preparatory stage, consideirng the PRSP is scheduled for completion in July this year. She asked members for similar initatives, how such workshops have worked and been perceived, any materials that could be shared and possible suggestions in terms of facilitators. Members, responding to this query came from 11 different countries covering 4 regions. Among the many resources shared, a toolkit on advocating for MDGs was pointed out, which also deals with the issue of linking the PRSP to the MDGs. Albania, Cape Verde, Lesotho, Tanzania and Uzbekistan shared their individual experiences, as they all have in some form tried to incorporate the MDGs in the PRSP as well as other national strategy papers. Members also shared that regionally, a few workshops, conferences and seminars have been held to address the links between the PRSP and MDGs, including an Asia and Pacific as well as a Latina America and the Caribbean conference.
