United Nations Development Group unite and deliver effective support for countries
UN Summit on the MDGs, 20-22 September 2010, New York

High Level Plenary Meeting of the General Assembly

In September 2010, a High Level Plenary Meeting of the General Assembly convened to review progress on the MDGs and chart the way forward. With just five years left to achieve the MDGs, the summit was an opportunity to redouble efforts and agree on a concrete action plan to accelerate progress towards meeting the Goals by their target date of 2015. Footage of the statements delivered at the event by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and UNDP Administrator and UNDG Chair Helen Clark can be found below.

The UNDG produced two publications—the Millennium Development Goals Thematic Papers and MDG Good Practices—to contribute to the MDG Summit discussions and beyond on how to achieve progress on the MDGs based on country level experiences.

UNDG Millennium Development Goals Thematic Papers (2010)

Thematic Papers on the MDGs

The thematic papers on the Millennium Development Goals covered in this publication identify promising or successful experiences in country efforts to move towards the various Goals, and summarizes key lessons and future measures conducive to accelerating MDG progress. The focus of the papers is, therefore, on the national and local level; on country-led (rather than UN) efforts; and on a range of immediate and underlying factors that appear to be important or essential in enabling progress under differing conditions and country circumstances. The papers draw on the ideas, experiences and advice of a considerable range of UN agencies and experts, including from non-governmental, academic and other sectors.

UNDG MDG Good Practices (2010)

Good practices covered in this publication have sought to address specific constraints and challenges in achieving the Goals, in each country’s context. The publication provides evidence on different approaches to achieving the various MDGs and the importance of recognizing the synergies between these and the internationally agreed development goals. Some case studies may be familiar while others may serve as technical references for development practitioners. They demonstrate that, even under resource-constrained circumstances, there are innovative ways of overcoming obstacles to accelerate progress.
