El Equipo de Directores Regionales de América Latina y el Caribe, a través de su grupo de trabajo inter-agencial OHCHR, UNICEF, UNFPA, OIT, PNUD, PMA y OPS, llevó a cabo un seminario sobre la Declaración de las Naciones Unidas sobre los Derechos de los Pueblos Indígenas del 6 al 8 de octubre en Lima. El seminario ofreció la oportunidad a varias organizaciones indígenas de Suramérica de intercambiar experiencias, buenas prácticas y hacer recomendaciones para la implementación de la Declaración. Se contó con la presencia de más de 70 participantes de varias organizaciones indígenas, instituciones de derechos humanos y gobiernos provenientes de 10 países de Suramérica: Argentina, Bolivia, Brasil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay, Perú, Uruguay y Venezuela. Esta fue la primera reunión de su tipo. Reuniones similares están planeadas para Centro América y el Caribe en el 2009.

El foco de la reunión fue el diálogo y el intercambio de experiencias entre todos los participantes. En grupos pequeños, los participantes analizaron la Declaración, identificaron desafíos claves y puntos de acción para implementar y realizar los derechos incluidos en ésta. Las recomendaciones para la acción se centraron en los temas de la declaración tales como tierra, medio ambiente, vivienda, agua y saneamiento, cultura, educación, salud, trabajo, migración, juventud, ancianos y mujeres entre otros.

Los participantes acentuaron la necesidad de trabajar juntos: “Los ríos, el aire y el agua, incluso la economía, no tienen ninguna nacionalidad, ellos no tienen ningún límite. Necesitamos trabajar juntos en la región para proteger a nuestro ambiente y a nuestras comunidades. Nuestra conexión con la Madre Naturaleza es nuestra vida.”

The Regional Directors Team of Latin America and the Caribbean, through its inter-agency working group OHCHR, UNICEF, UNFPA, ILO, UNDP, WFP and PAHO, held a seminar on the UN Declaration on Indigenous Peoples’ Rights from 6-8 October in Lima. The seminar offered the opportunity for various Indigenous groups in South America to exchange experiences, good practices and make recommendations for implementing the Declaration. Over 70 participants from various Indigenous Groups, human rights institutions and governments came from 10 countries of South America: Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela. This was the first meeting of its kind. Similar meetings are planned for Central America and Caribbean in 2009.

The focus of the meeting was the dialogue and exchange of experiences among the Indigenous leaders and other representatives. In small groups, the participants analyzed the Declaration, identified key challenges and clear action points to implement it and to realize the rights included therein. Action points focused on the themes in the Declaration such as land, environment, water and sanitation, culture, education, health, work, migration, youth, elderly and women among others.

The participants emphasized the need to work together: “Rivers, air and water, even the economy, they have no nationality, they have no boundaries. We need to work together in the region to protect our environment and our communities. Our connection to Mother Nature is our life.”
