Jets cut 16 players; McElroy has surgery

The Jets wasted little time trimming their roster the morning after an ugly performance in the preseason finale. The Daily News has learned that Gang Green released 16 players on Friday as they prepare to get down to the mandatory 53-man roster by 6 p.m. on Saturday. The Jets will likely be in the market for a No. 3 quarterback after an injury to Greg McElroy.

Ex-Giant Steve Smith was not in the Eagles' lineup Thursday night even though he was on the practice field for the first time since Philadelphia signed him last month. Smith is recovering from microfracture surgery on his left knee.
