Derek Jeter’s Contract Negotations Made Him a Little Grumpy

Photo: Tim Boyles/Getty Images

Derek Jeter's press conference has come and gone, and the sixteen-year veteran's next three years are now officially official. Considering the circumstances of Jeter's drawn-out negotiations, the conference was unlikely to transpire without some juicy soundbites (or textsnacks, since part of the event excluded cameras). Sure enough, Jeter admitted to being a bit chafed by this off-season's events to date:

As it went on and on, it got to Jeter, who told reporters: "It was an uncomfortable position that I felt was in. It was not an enjoyable experience."

Still, Jeter emphasized: "I had never planned on going anywhere, I didn't want to go to any other teams. I didn't want to hear from other teams."

It's understandable that Jeter would feel a little sour about the public backlash to the negotiations, especially given a commitment to the club that has spanned almost two decades. It's equally understandable that the Yankees treated this business transaction like any other, weighing their options and not acting on impulse or emotion. The good news is that it's December, and any ill feeling will surely have dissipated by the time spring training rolls around (that is, if the eight-figure paycheck Jeter just signed wasn't enough). All told, Derek Jeter is still a Yankee, the sun still sets in the west, and Joe Girardi would still look like Anthony Kiedis if he grew his hair out. All is well in the world. Right?

Better Know a Knick: Shawne Williams

Photo: Taylor Hill/FilmMagic

In October, Will authored a series of posts entitled "Better Know a Knick." He profiled the eleven Knicks most likely to actually see the floor, and did so with aplomb. None of these eleven Knicks were six-foot-nine guard-forward Shawne Williams, for obvious reasons. Williams, the former first-round pick out of Memphis whose career was derailed by multiple drug-related arrests, was a fringe player battling for the team's fifteenth and final roster spot. His competition for that spot was the beloved and nominally preferable Patrick Ewing Jr. Williams wasn't going to make the team, and even if he did, he wouldn't play in a Knick rotation well-stocked at his position. Well, he did, and he does.

It's time to meet Shawne. »

Day Two of Winter Meetings: Yankees Ink Jeter, Mets Set Sights on Paulino

Photo: Christian Petersen/Getty Images

It's Winter Meetings season in the MLB. As much as that sounds like a top-secret summit in some remote swath of tundra, it really just means that a bunch of general managers are in Disney World flinging money at one another. Chief among the money-flingers are Brian Cashman and the Yankees. The Bombers will formally announce their three-year, $51 millionish deal with Derek Jeter in a press conference this afternoon. While they officially ink Jeter (presumably on a giant cardboard check), the Yankees will keep an eye on the Cliff Lee sweepstakes in anticipation of a potentially massive seven-year offer from the Washington Nationals or some other team.

The Mets are treading more softly. »

The Knicks Continue to Squash Bad Teams

Good day, people of the Internet. I'm Seth. I blog about the Knicks, and I'll be filling in today while Will and Joe fight crime. As it happens, those Knicks are rolling these days. While the Jets combusted on national television, Amar'e Stoudemire and company quietly earned their fifth straight victory and their tenth in eleven games. New York snuffed the Minnesota Timberwolves 121–114, led by Stoudemire's fifth consecutive game surpassing the 30-point mark. (Idea: If Amar'e keeps breaking 30, can we start calling him "Triple X"? Are Roman-numeral jokes still cool?) His personal scoring flurry kept the Knicks ahead in the fourth, paving the way for a win that looked improbable in the early going.

It certainly didn't start well. »

The Jets Were Just Exposed and Embarrassed for Earth to See

The Jets lost 45–3 last night. 45–3. We could look at that score a million times and it would never look less crazy. The big-and-swingin' Jets, the '85 Bears Jets, the Super Bowl favorites from "Hard Knocks," the Rex Ryan Bravado Squad, lost 45–3. To their fiercest rival! On national television! Oh, boy, are we gonna hear about this game for a long time.

Nothing went right. »

The Case for George Steinbrenner, Hall of Famer

George Steinbrenner wasn't elected to the Hall of Fame today, and it wasn't even close: He received fewer than half of the sixteen votes of the Expansion Era Committee. (Twelve were required for election.) In a vote that took place just months after his death this summer, it's a pretty resounding rejection of one of the most controversial owners of his or any other era. It's also a shame.

Steinbrenner was no saint, but neither was Walter O'Malley. »

Video: Brian Cashman Rappels Down a Building Dressed As an Elf, Defeats the Red Sox Grinch

It's really everything we hoped it would be. The highlight comes around the 3:30 mark, when Cashman reveals his Yankees shirt and defeats the Red Sox–shirt-wearing Grinch while "Here Come the Yankees" blares over the loudspeakers. And yes, that's the strangest sentence we'll type all week. (It also capped a pretty productive weekend for the Yankees GM.) See the clip after the jump.

The Jets Finally Have a Game That Matters. REALLY Matters.

Over the last week, we've gotten pretty obsessed with ESPN's Playoff Machine, which allows you to predict results for every game left on the NFL schedule and see who, with your set of results, will end up in which playoff spot. As of today, the Jets have the No. 1 seed (and home-field advantage) in the AFC. But the last five games, everything can and will change.

Big game. »

Fordham’s John Skelton, Now Officially an NFL Quarterback

Back in April, right after the NFL Draft, we declared quarterback John Skelton the official Favorite Athlete of the Sports Section. Why? Because Skelton played for Joe's Fordham Rams in college and was drafted by our Buzzsaw That Is the Arizona Cardinals. He has been the Cards' third-string quarterback all season, but yesterday, after Derek Anderson and Max Hall spent most of a loss to the Rams attempting to replace divots in the University of Phoenix Stadium turf, Arizona coach Ken Whisenhunt put Skelton in the game. And he wasn't bad! The stats weren't great — 3-of-6 for 45 yards, zero TDs, zero INTs — but as someone who was watching the game, we assure you, he was the only quarterback on that team who could throw a ball farther than fifteen yards. He even nailed Larry Fitzgerald with the best pass a Cardinals quarterback has thrown all year. It's not known if Skelton will start for the 3–9 Cardinals next week against Denver, but if he does, a Fordham quarterback — a Fordham quarterback! — will be an NFL starting quarterback. For the Arizona Cardinals. The Sports Section swoons.

George Steinbrenner Was Not Elected to the Hall of Fame Today

The Hall of Fame announced the results of its Expansion Era Committee vote this morning, and the late Yankees owner didn't receive the required twelve votes for induction. Only Pat Gillick earned election from the committee — he received thirteen of the sixteen votes — while Marvin Miller fell a vote short. Steinbrenner received fewer than eight votes.

Will Steinbrenner ever get in? »
