Our PlayStation 3 Sees More Doom for Jets in Foxboro

As always, we ran through this week's NFL divisional round of the playoffs through Madden 11 on our PlayStation 3. And, as always, our PlayStation 3 told us the Jets are going to lose. Over the last two years, the Jets are now 0–5 in our PlayStation 3 simulations, thanks to a tough 31–24 virtual loss to the Patriots. Tom Brady was the stud, of course, going 25-for-40 for 335 yards and three touchdowns. It was another interception fest for Mark Sanchez, who must have done something wrong to our PlayStation 3 in the Tron grid once in his life; he threw four more, offsetting LaDainian Tomlinson's 106 yards rushing. At this point, we're not sure the virtual Jets could beat virtual Fordham. Anyway, the other games this weekend, simulated: Green Bay Packers 37, Atlanta Falcons 26; Seattle Seahawks 31, Chicago Bears 7; and Baltimore Ravens 21, Pittsburgh Steelers 14. Last week, our PS3 was 1–3. It's like you can't trust anyone anymore.

Is Mark Sanchez Joe Namath or Forrest Gump?

Much hay has already been made about the notion that Mark Sanchez, amazingly, is arguably already the most successful postseason quarterback in Jets history. (Joe Namath excluded from this conversation due to lack of actual playoffs back then, obviously.) Sunday's game against the Patriots will be his fifth playoff start, tying Chad Pennington for most playoff starts for a Jets quarterback. If the Jets somehow win Sunday, he will be starting his second AFC Championship Game in two years. That's one fewer than Peyton Manning and Dan Marino. And he's 24.

Amar’e Stoudemire Will Neither Confirm Nor Deny That He Texted Carmelo Anthony

Whether or not Amar'e Stoudemire actually texted Carmelo Anthony to tell him that he "wants him in New York," as Yahoo reported that he did, is a pretty minor point in the Carmelo Watch. But on a day without any leaks of information about a potential trade — just as Denver wants it, apparently — it'll do.

A False Alarm on the Andy Pettitte Front

For a moment, it looked like the Daily News had a bona fide Andy Pettitte update — the kind a certain other paper couldn't even get by showing up in Texas and asking the pajama-clad lefty about his future, right there on his front porch. Speaking from the owners' meetings in Arizona, Cashman said that "I don't think he's determined if he's officially finished or not, but he's chosen at this stage at least not to start in 2011." Finally, some real news, right? Well, no. Turns out, it was just a false alarm.

That Great Knicks Defense Was Fun While It Lasted

Remember all the way back to, er, Tuesday night, when the Knicks played a little defense and held the Blazers to 86 points and just 34.9 percent shooting from the field? Playing their second game in as many nights, and their third in four days, they didn't come close to repeating that formula last night against a rested Utah team — one that shot the lights out in a 131–125 victory. Seven players scored in double figures for Utah, led by Deron Williams and C.J. Miles, who dropped 24 each. As a team, Utah shot 58.4 percent from the field.

Syracuse Routs St. John’s, Stays Undefeated

The Johnnies hung with Syracuse for about eight minutes last night, even opening up a 17–9 lead at one point. But then came a 26–7 Orange run to close out the first half, and by night's end, Syracuse would be one of four remaining unbeatens following its convincing 76–59 win over the Red Storm. If Jack Bauer came hoping to see a classic Big East matchup at the Garden, he left disappointed.

St. John’s Faces Its Biggest Test Yet Against Syracuse Tonight

So far in Big East play, St. John's has won on the road at West Virginia and Providence, defeated No. 13 Georgetown at the Garden, and lost at No. 15 Notre Dame. Not bad! But tonight comes their biggest test yet: fourth-ranked, undefeated Syracuse, the team this blog may or may not have jinxed by covering it during tournament season last year. (Really, who's to say?) The Johnnies, by the way, received four points in Monday's AP poll — Orange fans are surely laughing at that, but hey, it's progress — good for a tie for the 39th spot in the rankings. The Red Storm's current senior class is 0–3 against Syracuse.

The Carmelo Anthony Trade Buzz, Now Starring Amar’e Stoudemire

In terms of attention-grabbing Carmelo Anthony–related reports/rumors/noise, it'll be difficult to beat yesterday's Yahoo article about how the Nuggets reportedly told the Nets they'd trade Anthony to the Knicks if details about discussions weren't kept quiet. Not impossible — this is getting out of hand rather quickly, after all — but difficult. So what's up today on the Carmelo Watch?

Antonio Cromartie, Linguistics Hero

Athletes, by nature, answer questions in as dull a fashion as possible. It's difficult to blame them for this. Athletes are constantly berated by reporters for giving boring quotes, but the minute they say something interesting or provocative, they're torn apart for it. So, today is a day to salute Jets cornerback Antonio Cromartie. The man has spoken his mind in an unabashed, pissed-off way, and we'll be damned if we're gonna come down on him for it.

The Rangers’ Winning Streak Ends, But Their Scoring Slump Continues

With a pretty Brandon Dubinsky goal just 4:15 into last night's Rangers game — one of a couple solid scoring chances in the early going — it appeared for a moment that the Rangers might snap out of the mini scoring slump they've been mired in lately — one, to be fair, they've been winning games during. (They've scored two goals or fewer in six of their last seven games, but they're 4-2-1 in that stretch.) But alas, they wouldn't score again against Montreal backup Alex Auld, and this time, the lack of goals would cost them in a 2–1 loss at the Garden that ended their three-game winning streak.
