It's been a long time coming, but this year was the first time that vegetables saw their moment in the spotlight. Call it what you will (bacon backlash?) but in 2010, vegetables were proclaimed to be the "new meat." From Mario's vegetarian cookbook to low-carbon, meat-free restaurant chains, vegetable-driven cuisine simply couldn't be ignored.

Remember that upcoming food reality show dubbed America's Next Great Restaurant? NBC's just released a trailer for the program formerly known as The United Plates of America.
Although NBC hasn't had too much luck with culinary air time, this competition — which pits aspiring restaurateurs with different gourmet concepts against each other for the chance to win a new chain backed by Bobby Flay, Curtis Stone, Chipotle's Steve Ells, and Nestle rep Lorena Garcia — looks pretty intriguing.

No, it has nothing to do with the fact that one in six Americans fell prey to foodborne illness this year. Rather, it's the latest terror threat to America, which, according to CBS News, involves use of poisons in hotels and restaurants in multiple locations over a single weekend.

At Niu Ba Ba in Taipei, Taiwan, noodle-slurpers shell out the equivalent of $324 US dollars for a bowl of the world's most expensive noodles.

In response to a shocking number of recalls in the past couple of years, the current administration has taken a number of steps to reform food safety. The latest measure toward policy change: a Senate bill that passed over the weekend, giving the FDA authority to recall food, as well as access to internal records at farms and food production facilities. It's expected to be signed into law both by the House and President Obama.

In February 2009, we heard the first rumblings that Country Strong star Gwyneth Paltrow had nabbed a cookbook deal for a family recipe compilation to be released in 2010.
Well, it won't be released this year, but there are finally more details on her new book, called My Father's Daughter: Delicious, Easy Recipes Celebrating Family and Togetherness. The 300-page title, which is slated to drop April 13 of next year, is filled with full-color photos, 150 recipes, and stories of growing up with father Bruce Paltrow.

Cupcake fans rejoice! The iconic New York City bakery Magnolia, whose cupcakes were made famous by Sex and the City, has announced plans of expansion. The cupcakery hopes to open new stores in New York, New Jersey, Washington, Boston, Philadelphia, and Chicago — and it's just signed a lease for a massive production facility in Harlem that will allow it to sell cupcakes online.
