Campari, the bright orange Italian aperitif that's made with a secret mixture of herbs and aromatics, is celebrating its 150th birthday this year! To commemorate the occasion, I stirred up the classic cocktail that's known as a negroni. Equal parts Campari, gin, and sweet vermouth, this potent concoction is not for the faint of heart.

It's strong and it's bitter, but if you enjoy dry drinks and the flavor of gin, you'll love a negroni. Following proper bartending techniques, a negroni, which is 100 percent alcohol, should be stirred and not shaken. It can be served straight up in a chilled martini glass, but I prefer to sip it on the rocks. Learn the proportions to this essential beverage after the break.

1 ounce sweet vermouth
Orange wedge for garnish

Directions

  1. In an ice-filled mixing glass, add gin, Campari and sweet vermouth. Stir until well chilled.
