    • John Skelton Named Cardinals' Starting QB by Reluctant Ken Whisenhunt
    • Cardinals head coach Ken Whisenhunt announced Friday that rookie quarterback John Skelton would make his first career start Sunday when Arizona hosts Denver. But if Skelton was waiting for Whisenhunt to deliver a huge vote of confidence, he'll need to hold out a lot longer. "Didn't really have a choice," Whisenhunt said, according to Darren Urban the Cardinals' official website, who added that Whisenhunt cited Skelton's command of the offense ... More »

Since joining the Cardinals, Whisenhunt was able to guide Arizona to its first-ever Super Bowl berth, as well coaching the team to back-to-back divisional titles for the first time since 1974-75.

In his first full season as an NFL head coach, Whisenhunt was able to lead the Cardinals to an 8-8 record - the team's first non-losing campaign in nine years - as well as a three-game improvement over the team's 5-11 record under Dennis Green in 2006.

Arizona Cardinals History

The Cardinals are the oldest continuously operational football franchise in the United States, tracing their roots back to 1898, 22 years before the founding of what became the National Football League.

The team, based in Chicago, joined the franchise that eventually became the crosstown rival Bears in the league's first season in 1920, and are one of just two teams to have played in every season since.

The Cardinals were involved in controversy in their early years as well, as Chicago was awarded the 1925 NFL championship because they topped the NFL standings - although the Pottsville Maroons would have had a better mark had they not been suspended in a controversial ruling for playing an unauthorized exhibition game by league president Joseph Carr. While the Cardinals initially did not want to claim the title, after the sale of the team to the Bidwill family in 1933, the team then began to embrace the title.

The team did win its first NFL championship game in more conventional fashion in 1947, defeating the Eagles 28-21 at Comiskey Park - the last title the team has won. The team reached the championship the next season, but lost a rematch in Philadelphia.

The Cardinals, facing sparse attendance in Chicago and having a rough stretch of play in the 1950s, elected to move south to St. Louis for the 1960 season.

Despite the presence of baseball's St. Louis Cardinals already playing in the market, the team kept the nickname, but only had marginal success in Missouri. The team won a pair of NFC East titles in 1974 and 1975 and a spot in the strike-shortened season, but didn't record a playoff win or host a playoff game in St. Louis.

The franchise moved again for the 1988 season, this time heading to Arizona.

There, the team recorded its first playoff win in 1998, beating Dallas, and in 2008, finally reached the Super Bowl with a win over Philadelphia. The team lost to the Steelers in Super Bowl XLIII.
