Profile

Alter co-owners Tommy Cole and Roy Caires started their first business in 2004, designing one-of-a-kind reconstructed vintage pieces. The pair displays their high-end apparel in this cozy Greenpoint showroom, working out of a design studio nearby. Their original line, This Old Thing, gets lots of mileage out of salvaged fabrics; seersucker trousers get clipped down to make men’s summer shorts, for instance. There are a few other recycled-apparel brands like Preloved, U.S. Rags, and Melissa Shoes, but most of the clothing comes from contemporary fringe-fashion labels like Cheap Monday, Stiska Design, and Kill City—hip designers whose sensibilities range from trim, minimal Swedish looks to indie-rocker plaid and denim styles. This location carries the men’s collection, while the sister store for women’s fashions can be found across the street.
