Profile

Named after Huysmans's À Rebours, a fin-de-siècle French novel about a dandy who retreats from society to cultivate his private pleasures, this men’s shop and atelier is appropriately dramatic, gothic, and refined. The space feels like an antiquated living room, with a maroon leather couch, vintage dressers and side tables, and a smattering of decorative oddities: vases of feathers, terrariums, a baboon skull suspended in a glass dome, an imposing taxidermied white peacock. The shop was founded by a quartet of designers, each with a different sartorial specialty. Ryan Matthew creates handmade leather goods and silver and brass cuff links, brooches, and bracelets; Jake Mueser (a former D.J.) and Amber Doyle stitch custom-made suits; and Simon P. Jacobs designs high-end bespoke jeans. The clothing is intricately detailed and formed with luxe fabrics, like Italian cotton shirts with hidden buttons and tiny colors (off-the-rack for around $200, custom-tailored for $250 and up), British-sixties-inspired gray wool suits ($1,800 and up), and dead-stock American-milled denim. Though the paisley-print skinny ties, nautically inspired pendants, and meticulously fitted jeans each draw their own fans, the standout here are the classic, slimly tailored suits that would make Chuck Bass proud.
