For being a major winter blockbuster, nobody really has any idea what to expect from Tron: Legacy this weekend. Disney has done everything in its power to completely saturate the market with images, posters, trailers and ads, but there are still people out there that have no idea what the original Tron is and the reviews have been tremendously mixed. Well, now the midnight numbers have arrived and... we still have no idea what to expect.
Deadline is reporting that Tron: Legacy managed to pull in $3.6 million from screenings at 12:01am last night. Now, this may seem paltry compared to the numbers brought in by the latest Harry Potter ($24 million) and Twilight ($30 million) movies, but the most significant comparison may be to the all-time box office champion: Avatar. Some may remember last year, almost to the date, that it was reported that James Cameron's return to science fiction raked in only $3 million during its midnight screenings. It's also significant to point out that Tron: Legacy has set a record with 25% of its take last night coming from the larger format screens.
The truth is that we probably won't have any clue as to whether the movie is a success or failure until sometime late on Sunday. The truth is that people enjoy flashy special effects, but may also be turned off by some of the film's harsher critics. Let's just take the wait and see approach.
