Sarah Palin to Senate: Vote Down New START Former Alaska guv believes new treaty 'makes no strategic sense'

(Newser) – Sarah Palin comes out swinging against New START, the nuclear arms reduction treaty currently being considered for ratification by the Senate, in a National Review op-ed. The treaty is not "in America's interest," the former Alaska governor writes, as it "requires the US to reduce our nuclear weapons and allows the Russians to increase theirs." She also characterizes the new verification regime as "weaker" than that under the previous START, "making it harder for us to detect Russian cheating."

But most offensive is the fact that New START "recognizes a link between offensive and defensive weapons," a "linkage [that] virtually guarantees that either we limit our missile defenses or the Russians will withdraw from the treaty." This is a no-go for Palin, since "missiles that threaten us can come from Russia, Iran, China, North Korea, or anywhere else"—and we shouldn't have to diminish our defense capabilities in general because of a treaty made with one nation in particular. The Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty which we say prohibits Iran from developing a nuclear weapon (like North Korea, Israel, Pakistan, India, China etc.) also obligates the U.S. and Russia to work toward the reduction and eventual elimination of ours. By taking this position, Sarah is helping Ahmedinejad to make his case.

Oh goody, a Sarah Palin thread. Let me guess...the left says she's stupid and the right likes her. I don't like her but she is doing a hell of job solidifying her base and my guess is reading a lot of newspapers everyday. By 2012 she'll be able to stand toe to toe with any national candidate. The hatred of the left will, as always work in her favor and drive all the couch potato conservatives out to vote. I don't know why the left keep doing this, if they would just stfu most conservatives would stay home thinking they've got it in the bag. No accounting for stupidity. Hopefully the left will learn...but Nov 2, 2010 was only a few weeks ago and here they are in this thread trying to out liberal out hate each other. Good luck with that.

Sarah, it's time to sit down and be quiet, while the adults handle the government. In the meantime, you could read, or watch Russia, or hunt some moose from a helicopter.
