If you've grown weary of the rainbow of plaids that, over the past few years, have explored every possible color combination of crisscrossing stripes, then salvation is on its way. Enter "shadow plaid," which is composed of black, white, and gray and is now trendy, according to the Times. Rag & Bone's David Neville explains, "I wouldn’t wear a bold, bright plaid, but I would wear a shadow plaid. Subtle is good, you know?” Saks's men's fashion director, Eric Jennings, agrees and even goes so far as to proclaim shadow plaids "the new solids," because they are "the perfect background for a pop of color.” What form this "pop" might take, he doesn't say — loud ties? neon pocket squares? Maybe colorful plaid wasn't so bad after all. [NYT]
