What is RSS?
RSS stands for "Really Simple Syndication" and is an XML-based format used to syndicate and distribute content. New York offers numerous RSS feeds for use on news websites, Web logs (blogs), and news aggregators. These feeds contain headlines, short summaries, and links back to nymag.com for the full article.

How can I use RSS?
By syndicating these headlines through RSS, we allow you to stay up-to-date on your favorite New York topics and columns. You can quickly scan the latest headlines and articles all in one place as soon as they are published instead of visiting multiple sites.

How do I start using RSS feeds?
First, you will need to select a news reader. A news reader is a piece of software that checks for new articles through RSS feeds and allows you to read headlines and summaries that have been added to them. Some readers are web-based and some are downloadable applications. Web-based readers allow you to view your feeds on any computer whereas downloadable readers allow you to save articles on your personal computer.

Where do I get a news reader?
There are a number of different news readers and new ones are available all the time. Different readers work on different operating systems and browsers, so you will need to select one that works with your computer. Here are a few web-based readers that may work for you:

How do I add RSS feeds to my news reader?
Once you have selected a news reader, you can then begin selecting content that you would like to receive on your reader by subscribing to RSS feeds. For example, if you would like to keep up on the latest New York food and restaurant articles, simply go to the main RSS page and you will notice an orange RSS button next to the "Food & Restaurants" feed that looks like this: RSS.

This button links to the XML feed itself, but don't let the raw code frighten you! To find the RSS URL, right click on the orange RSS button and select "Copy Link". Then go to the area to add a RSS feed by URL in your news reader, click on the URL entry field and paste the link in. Once you submit the URL, you have successfully added the RSS feed to your reader.

How to Sign Up for RSS Feeds

There are several ways to subscribe to RSS feeds. You can use a web-based feed reader or install a news aggregator that will display RSS feeds from websites you select to track the latest updates and headlines, all in one place! Once you select a reader, you can add feeds by clicking on the orange "RSS" button next to the feed.

If you're a My Yahoo! user, you can add RSS feeds directly to your My Yahoo! homepage without installing a separate news reader.
