Based solely on his filmography since 2006, when both Borat and Talladega Nights were released, Sacha Baron Cohen doesn't seem to be in any rush to load up his schedule. In those four years, Baron Cohen has only done three other movies, one of which was animated (Madagascar 2) and another in which his character is killed about 10 minutes after being introduced (Sweeney Todd). Then again, if I were married to Isla Fisher I probably wouldn't want to be out of the house too much either. Those stats out there, the actor is currently in production on Martin Scorsese's Hugo Cabret, has plans to make a movie about an immigrant goat herder, and recently signed on to play Freddy Mercury in a Queen biopic. Apparently the acting bug is starting to bite hard.
The Los Angeles Times reports that the actor may be involved with an English language adaptation of the Spanish franchise called Torrente. A major hit in Spain that has already spawned three movies, with a fourth due out next year, the series is about a character named Jose Luis Torrente, a former cop who also happens to be vile, racist and corrupt. Alec Berg, Jeff Schaffer and David Mandel, all former Seinfeld writers, are currently working on the script. The only question at this point is whether Baron Cohen will choose to do the film, as the article says, because he is "famously fussy about his starring vehicles."
While Bruno didn't match the brilliance that was Borat, I still personally find Sacha Baron Cohen immensely entertaining and I'm always interested to see a project that he is involved in. Not familiar with the source material, I can't say how funny Torrente is, but if it's getting that much attention overseas, they must be doing something right.
