Kate Middleton is now the proud wearer of Princess Diana's engagement ring, consisting of an eighteen-carat oval sapphire surrounded by fourteen diamonds. Princess Di chose the ring herself from Garrard, the royal family's official jeweler for the past three centuries, which was a controversial move at the time of her engagement since Prince Charles didn't custom-design the rocks for her. Prince William is said to have asked for the ring following his mother's death.

"It [the ring] was very special to me and Kate is very special to me, so it's good that they are together," the prince told journalists gathered at St. James's Palace today. "It was to make sure that my mother did not miss out on today."
