Nostalgia for 2004: TV's Golden Year

by Stephanie Earp, posted Oct 18th 2010 8:00PM

I actually remember the pilot season of 2004 -- that alone is saying something. When you write about TV, you're constantly bombarded by previews and they tend to run together. After all, half the time they star the same actors year after year (Matthew Perry, Amy Brenneman, etc.) and they often come in matched pairs with the same plot ('30 Rock' and 'Studio 60,' 'Ghost Whisperer' and 'Medium,' etc.). But 2004 stands out as a year when the pilots were unusually good, and the casts full of fresh faces. At least it all seemed fresh then. Not to be cruel, but it's starting to look a little haggard now.

A lot of shows that began in 2004 are still lingering on the air -- 'Desperate Housewives,' 'House,' and 'The Apprentice' are probably the biggest -- but even those that aren't running anymore still exercise a big influence over our thoughts about TV. 'Lost' changed how networks and viewers think about supernatural dramas on TV, and while the results have been mixed, thanks to 'Lost', we viewers have seen some bizarre stuff make it into series over the last while. 'Veronica Mars,' though it didn't last, was another 2004 show that tested the waters of what you could do in certain genres on TV. The normative violence of rape and sexual assault that girls face in high school and college had never been shown that way before -- and no tougher, smarter, cooler heroine had faced it.

'How I Met Your Mother' Co-Creator Talks Jennifer Morrison and Season 6 Ambitions

by Maureen Ryan, posted Oct 18th 2010 6:10PM
When an audience's emotional investment in a show is deep and long-lasting, that can actually be double-edged sword. The bonds to the characters and the story can help sustain a loyal fan base, but it's not hard for an engaged fandom to go from passionate cheerleading to vocal disappointment when they feel important aspects of a show begin to lag.

Is there such a thing as a triple-edged sword? 'How I Met Your Mother' (8PM ET Mondays, CBS), which welcomes Jennifer Morrison in a recurring role in Monday's episode, has three distinct challenges: It has to be easy for casual viewers to get into; it has to sustain an ongoing mythology that the show's hardcore fans want to see served with wit and creativity; and it has to take the characters on ongoing journeys of discovery and evolution.

Most half-hour comedies, especially on the broadcast networks, don't bother with two of those three things. In a recent half-hour interview on the 'Talking TV with Ryan and Ryan' podcast, 'HIMYM' co-creator Carter Bays talked about the revitalized sixth season of the comedy, which has one unique challenge built right into its name.

'Hawaii Five-0' Premiere the Most DVR'd of All Time, But It Doesn't Really Matter

by Jason Hughes, posted Oct 18th 2010 5:30PM
'Hawaii Five-0'As DVR penetration continues to grow, at around 40 percent now, its presence gives one rookie show something to crow about. In a season where there are no breakout stars among the newcomers, it's something to note that the premiere of CBS's 'Hawaii Five-0' is now the most DVR'd show of all time, according to The Washington Post.

While experts are still trying to figure out how to make money from the DVR, the industry has agreed that these "Live+7" numbers will be the figure that count for the history books.

Fox-Cablevision Blackout: The Ugliest Retransmission Fight Yet

by Gary Susman, posted Oct 18th 2010 5:00PM
New York Giants vs. Detroit Lions, Oct. 17, 2010
We've seen a lot of fights over the past 12 months between channels and cable service providers over proposed fee increases, fights that have led to threatened blackouts, and in some cases actual blackouts, of popular event programming.

But no fight this year has gotten as ugly as the current one between Fox and Cablevision, which has resulted in a blackout currently in its third day, a shutoff that has already cost 3 million households in three states the opportunity to watch some much anticipated baseball and football games.

ABC Family Pulls 'Friday Night Lights'

by Jean Bentley, posted Oct 18th 2010 4:30PM
'Friday Night Lights'Bandwagon-jumpers just getting into the TV miracle known as 'Friday Night Lights' will now have to look elsewhere for their Dillon Panthers fix: ABC Family, which began airing reruns of the NBC drama last month, has yanked the not-really-about-football show from its lineup.

The network confirmed to The Ausiello Files that the series failed to nab the necessary ratings to keep it on the schedule. "It wasn't performing from a ratings standpoint," said a spokesperson. "We moved it around the schedule, but unfortunately it wasn't holding up."

But don't get tears in those clear eyes just yet, because you can still watch the show online -- as long as you're a Netflix subscriber. All four seasons of the show are available streaming on the company's Watch Instantly service. Alternately, you can watch the last five episodes of the fourth season on Slashcontrol.

Patti Stanger Dishes on 'Millionaire Matchmaker' Season 4

by Christine Champagne, posted Oct 18th 2010 4:00PM
Patti Stanger, Millionaire MatchmakerIf you're single, be wary of subjecting yourself to Patti Stanger's scrutiny on Bravo's 'Millionaire Matchmaker.' You might find that your comfortable, beloved high-tops have been traded in for sexy, high-heeled pumps. But you might also find yourself dating a millionaire.

Stanger called TV Squad to discuss the fourth season of the show, premiering Tue., Oct. 19 at 9PM ET, which is set in New York City. Talking to Stanger is a lot of fun, though she loves to gab, so what follows is a condensed version of our conversation. (We had to leave a few things out, like Stanger's crush on Jimmy Kimmel. And she could go on for hours about her favorite show, TLC's 'Sister Wives.')

But read on for her preview of the new season, which finds her playing matchmaker for Chris and Albie Manzo (the sons of Caroline Manzo from 'The Real Housewives of New Jersey') and the celebrities she'd love to work with in the future.

Top 5 Celebrity Narrators in Television History

by Brad Trechak, posted Oct 18th 2010 2:55PM
Arrested DevelopmentThey're heard, but not seen. TV show narrators have set the scene for viewers for decades, their familiar voices cluing us into what to expect (or how to react) to certain plot developments. And more often than not, these off-screen narrators are well-known celebrities -- making their comments and asides all the more familiar and comforting.

While compiling a list of our five favorite celebrity narrators, only two stipulations were used: First, this list only deals with scripted american programming. Documentaries don't count, nor do any overseas imports. Second, the narrator in question can not have appeared on screen as a regular character on the series (although in some instances, the narrator is a future version of the main character, played by a different actor).

That being said, here are our five ...

ESPN for Women: Condescending or a Good Idea?

by Jean Bentley, posted Oct 18th 2010 11:30AM
espnWWomen are getting their own online sports destination from ESPN -- whether they like it or not.

ESPN's new women's brand, espnW, is launching this fall as a website, but could eventually become its own network, The New York Times reports. Laura Gentile, vice president of espnW, said the brand will be marketed toward women 18-34, and the site will launch this fall.

While some women's sports figures support the new brand -- "I don't think there's ever been this much planning, research and commitment before," said tennis legend Billie Jean King -- critics worry that a separate women-only presence is condescending, and would diminish the presence of women's sports on the flagship network.
