New Spring Collections: Alexander McQueen, Valentino, Chanel, and More!

From left: Chanel, Valentino, and Jean-Charles de Castelbajac.Photo: Imaxtree

Today was one of the biggest fashion days of the season, if not the year: Valentino, Alexander McQueen, and Chanel all showed their spring collections, complete with feathered gowns, full orchestras, and matching father-toddler outfits. The biggest story of the day was, of course, Sarah Burton's first show as McQueen's creative director, but we've got lots of other looks for you to pore over as well, including polka-dotted silk and ruffled cuffs at Valentino and sheer neckerchiefs at Yves Saint Laurent. Also, check out the Le Petit Prince motif at Jean-Charles de Castelbajac and the bubblegum-pink purses at Loewe by browsing the links below.

Rumors: Stefano Pilati’s Fate at YSL Uncertain

Stefano Pilati

Rumors about Yves Saint Laurent replacing Stefano Pilati have been around for some time, but apparently they've picked up steam again in Paris. Godfrey Deeny writes in Fashion Wire Daily:

However, it was ironic on exiting such a powerful show to recall that Paris has been flooded by rumors that Pilati’s position is under threat, and that headhunters have been actively interviewing potential replacements, which says something for the nervousness of the times. For, in effect, Pilati just underwent a very public test of his talent, which he passed with flying colors.

In a season where roughly one three designers in New York and in Europe made some reference to YSL, Pilati’s was unquestionably the best interpretation. It’s a strange way to fight for your job, but these are strange, and straightening, times in fashion.

Pilati has been rumored to be heading to Armani in the past.

Slideshow: Sixteen Loose Knits for Fall

Yes, it’s drizzly outside, but it still doesn’t feel right busting out the heavy woolen sweaters in early October. Lucky us, knitwear seems to be opening up this season with looser stitches, lightweight yarns, and crafty cutouts. We scoured our favorite retailers to find fall-ready sweaters, in cropped, cardigan, and oversized styles. Check out our top picks from Mink Pink, eryn brinié, Acne, and more in the slideshow ahead.

First Look: Uniqlo + J Outerwear

Jil Sander's second collection for Uniqlo doesn't drop until Thursday, but we scored an early look at some of the line's covetable outerwear. Somehow, Sander manages to make even bulky puffer coats look chic (though punky model Raquel Zimmermanndoesn't hurt either). From hooded swing coats to high-collared trenches, we predict the cold-weather offerings will be scooped up fast. And in line with the spring collection, prices are reasonable: Outerwear ranges from $69.90 to $229.90, dresses are $99 to $149.90, sweaters are $49.90 to $179.90, and bottoms are $59.90 to $69.90. Deborah Needleman Just Wants Everyone to Have ‘Beautiful Things and Great Taste’

Photo: Melissa Credit

After earning a cult following as the founder and editor-in-chief of the dearly departed Domino magazine, Deborah Needleman has a new gig: She’s the freshly instated editor of “Off Duty,” the Wall Street Journal’s two-week-old Saturday lifestyle section. The sixteen-page weekly features a slew of new contributors (a few of them Domino alums) writing about design, fashion, food, technology, travel, and family. But though she may covet the luxurious designs of Phoebe Philo and Tom Ford, Needleman’s editorial approach is refreshingly unfussy. “Style is such a fluid concept,” she says. “It’s in how you decorate, how you cook for your friends, how you wear your clothes, and how you hang with your children.” She’s not necessarily aiming to lure readers away from the fashion glossies, either. “The job of the section is to translate the runway for real people,” she says. “A lot of fashion coverage is geared toward the few of us who go to shows and work in the industry, rather than the masses of women who care about style."

Florence Welch Went Pantsless at Chanel

Florench WelchPhoto: Francois Durand/Getty Images

Florence Welch (of Florence and the Machine) attended the Chanel show today in a Chanel jacket and nary a stocking to shield her thighs from the chilly air. It's hard to tell what she's wearing underneath, but it's definitely not much, and there seem to be some goose bumps going on. On a more festive note, her coat's tinsel-y gold trim looks downright Christmas-y with her red hair and shoes.

What do you think of Flo's pantsless look?

Artist and videographer Jeremy Kost caught up with Alexa Chung backstage at Chloé. Chung was hungry, but the only food in sight was a sad plate of lettuce leaves and tiny bits of cheese. Woe is the life of a jet setting model.

How Much Do You Love Leopard Print?

Looks from Givenchy, and Carine Roitfeld.Photo: Imaxtree, Pascal Le Segretain /Getty Images, Imaxtree

Givenchy's Spring 2011 collection was soaked in leopard print. Many top editors running around to the shows look like they've taken a bath in the stuff, too. Carine Roitfeld wore brand-spanking-new leopard Givenchy to French Vogue's big 90th anniversary ball. She also wore leopard to the Chloe show, where Anna Dello Russo and Virginie Mouzat also wore the animal spots. The Times's Eric Wilson reports H&M;'s windows in Paris are likewise covered in the print. But Cathy Horyn thinks it's not a "new or particularly inspired" thing in fashion — or as it appeared on Givenchy's runway at least. She also thinks that by next spring, when people are supposed to be wearing these clothes, it might look "tame." She has a point: Carine looks hot in it now, but how about in nine months? And it already feels like leopard clothes are everywhere. Lanvin did a bunch of leopard for pre-fall 2010. And you can buy all manner of designer leopard items on Net-a-Porter by labels like Stella McCartney, Vivienne Westwood, Miu Miu, and Tory Burch right now. Will you want to look like a jungle creature into the next warm months as well? Or does fierce come in other patterns and fabrics for you? The wheat-growing boobs at McQueen look pretty enticing to us.

Video: A Haunting Rehearsal at Issey Miyake

When artist and videographer Jeremy Kost went backstage at the Issey Miyake show in Paris, he found models naked under lab coats, the designer pontificating on the meaning of beauty, and a dry run in a near-empty room that'll send chills down your spine. Watch and see.

Sarah Burton’s First Show for McQueen Full of Feathers and Wheat Sheaths

The most significant show of the entire spring 2011 season is arguably Alexander McQueen's, which walked today in Paris. This is the first major runway show for the house since the designer took his own life in February, and his right-hand woman Sarah Burton stepped up to the creative director title. Burton assured the press she wouldn't present a show with McQueen's signature theatrics, which isn't her thing, but she still kept things plenty interesting, sending models down a runway consisting of wooden planks with grass poking through. The nature-inspired show opened with an all white look including pants and a multilayered frock coat. Mini dresses followed, and then out came the major dresses with giant full skirts made of what looked like fake hair. Show Studio tweets the dresses were made of pheasant feathers and golden wheat sheaths. The models' real hair, on the other hand, resembled basket weaving. The shoes were no Armadillos, but they retained McQueen's signature intricacy. Some came with butterflies, and others with what looks like plant fringe. Reactions are still trickling onto the Internet, but Style.com calls Burton "a very worthy successor." Show Studio found it "stunning."

Highlights From Chanel: 2-Year-Old Male Model Debuts, Ines de la Fressange Walks, and More

Just because it feels like everyone showed hot orange and pink in their spring 2011 shows doesn't mean Karl Lagerfeld will. Cathy Horyn reports:

"I really don't think women want to go around looking like a Saint Laurent shopping bag," Mr. Lagerfeld said backstage, referring to the bright pink and orange of the vintage YSL bag.

Horyn seems to agree, enchanted by Lagerfeld's "beautiful" Chanel show in the Grand Palais in Paris this morning. She loved the light, floaty feel of the clothes, quite a contrast to the full faux fur suits Lagerfeld sent around an imported iceberg for the fall 2010 show. But that's not to say this show wasn't as spendy as it always is: The runway consisted of a black-and-white garden inspired by 1961 film Last Year at Marienbad, and extended in three directions, with an orchestra at the end of one.

Sarah Burton's first runway show for Alexander McQueen since the designer died in February is scheduled for 7:30 P.M. in Paris, which is 1:30 P.M. est. The Moment is backstage tweeting pics, including this of a very shaggy dress that looks to be made of feathers and this of the hair, which is a weave. Like, literally a weave. Genius. Gisele’s Random, Poorly Dressed Wooer Has Been Identified!

Homeboy seen thisclose to kissing Gisele at the French Vogue masked ball last week has been identified despite his mask. His name is Helly Nahmad, and he's an art dealer who used to date Ana Beatriz Barros. He and Gisele are just friends, but evidently the sort of friends who don't have the balls to tell each other what pants they should and shouldn't wear to the biggest French Vogue party of the century.
