After making a savory version of French toast topped with tomato jam last weekend, it occurred to me that, when preserved, tomatoes are well-suited for both sweet and savory applications, too. Tomatoes are technically fruit, and when they're ripe they possess a level of sweetness that rivals a sassy nectarine. This means the seedy red rounds are ideal contenders for a traditional fruit jam style, spread atop bread or toast.

This month, I've shifted my focus from Summer cookout food to something a little more soothing, but amidst a San Francisco Indian Summer, I'm not quite ready to plunge into full-blown Fall fare just yet. So in addition to treasuring those timeless staples, I've also looked for recipes that fall (pardon the pun) right in between those two seasons. One such gem is this slow-cooked dish of chicken with fresh tomatoes.

I always try to eat seasonally when I can, but I struggle at times like right now, when we're in between two very distinct seasons. If all goes well, 2010 could be a blockbuster year for the Deen family. Southern cooking queen Paula Deen is planning a second eatery; meanwhile, sons Bobby and Jamie Deen are tapping into uncharted territory with a male-friendly food magazine.
Paula Deen, who rose to fame with her Savannah, GA, restaurant The Lady & Sons, hopes to repeat success with a new spot at Harrah's Cherokee Casino and Hotel in Asheville, NC.

These days, Food Network simply isn't enough to quell viewers' hunger for culinary programming. Last year, Scripps Networks Interactive announced its plans to replace lifestyle channel Fine Living with a new network, The Cooking Channel, debuting in the Fall of 2010. But today, the company revealed that The Cooking Channel will premiere earlier than expected, on Memorial Day, May 31.

The Food Network will soon be getting a little sister. Yesterday, Scripps Networks Interactive announced it plans to launch another culinary channel next year to replace lifestyle channel Fine Living, or FLN. The new network, to be called the Cooking Channel, will debut in the Fall of 2010.
