Labor Day sales are here again! Before you go too crazy with your purchases, I'm curious to know how much Savvy readers are planning on shelling out this weekend. Apparently the best buys this holiday are on children's clothing and midrange electronics, National Retail Federation Vice President Ellen Davis tells US News. Davis says some companies are willing to take losses in order to attract more customers.
As for me, I think I'm going to take advantage of the discounts to buy a birthday present for a friend! What about you — are you going Labor Day shopping, and how much are you planning to spend?

Who owns your Whopper? Burger King's sales have been flagging, and analysts say it's due to having less variety on its menu and targeting a narrow demographic. Over the years, the reins of ownership have switched between British and American firms, and the latest company to buy out the fast-food giant is not from either of those countries. Guess which country the latest boss of Burger King is from?

Seems like lots of people had something to say about being called "babe" or "sweetheart" at work, and there were comments on my Do People at Work Use Pet Names? poll that almost made me laugh out loud. I was careful to keep my grinning to a minimum because I don't want to scare off my co-workers. Here are some of my favorites:
I just happen to work with the tallest, sexiest man on the planet, and he likes calling me sweetheart. Wow do I love that. I never minded it other than that, it's all about intention I guess. As long as they're not calling me lazy or unqualified, I don't really care. — Betty Wayne
Pookie. My boss calls me pookie. What is worse being called pookie or answering each time she calls me that? — Anonymous
Well my nickname is Missy, but I do have a real name... and my boss calls me missy... and it annoys me. Or he'll call me Miss... grrr. The worst part though is that he sometimes holds the "S," and makes a "sssssssss" noise. I can't tell you how much that bugs me. I will usually cough or make a noise so he'll stop hissing. It's like a disease with him. — missy1632
I know quite a lot of people who are studying for the GMAT or the GRE. There are many reasons why people want to further their education and there are lists of them all over the Internet, but here are some of the reasons that I've heard personally:
Changing career — This is one of the most common reasons and a good one as well. If you want to jump into certain field when you work in a totally different industry, graduate school will speed up the transition. Schools like diversity so don't think your chances are slim if you don't have a related background. For example, I've met all kinds of MBA students, from a former news anchor to a nonprofit worker.
Meeting a spouse — Yes, this is actually one of the incentives that I've been hearing about quite a bit. You'll be meeting lots of people with similar interest and goals so who knows what kind of romance will blossom from those late night study sessions.
