Two Justin Richards' goals saw Neil Warnock's QPR fall at the first hurdle in the Carling Cup as League Two Port Vale won 3-1 at Loftus Road. Richards slotted home a rebound for his first after John McCombe headed against the bar and Sean Rigg made it 2-0. Richards tapped in another rebound to make it three before Antonio German pulled one back.

Leicester beat Macclesfield in a 4-3 thriller at the Walkers Stadium. Nat Brown gave the Silkmen the lead but Leicester responded through Robbie Neilson. Matty Fryatt struck twice after the break and Logan reduced Macclesfield's arrears after 64 minutes. Wellens restored Leicester's advantage five minutes later but Colin Daniel made it 4-3 with eight minutes left.

A stoppage-time goal from Alan Lee gave Crystal Palace victory in a pulsating Carling Cup first-round tie at Huish Park. Yeovil had threatened a late winner themselves but Palace broke quickly and the substitute Kieron Djilali got in a cross from the left and Lee beat the defence to shoot into the roof of the net.

League Two Shrewsbury came from 3-0 down to beat League One Charlton 4-3 at the New Meadow. Pawel Abbott's first goals for the club and one from Lee Martin put the Addicks in control. But Jake Robinson and a Yado Mambo own goal put the Shrews back in it by half-time, and Daniel O'Donnell and Matt Harrold completed the turnaround.
