The Guardian iPad app, Eyewitness, is now available to UK users

... and Steve Jobs likes it

As the iPad goes on sale in the UK I wanted to write a quick note to update you on the success our Guardian EyeWitness app has generated Stateside over the past few weeks.

After being showcased during the OS4 announcement by none other than Apple CEO Steve Jobs himself, who took a step back onstage to admire it and described it as "cool" and "really nice", our app has since been downloaded nearly 90,000 times.

To put that into perspective, it means that around one in every 10 people who bought an iPad now has Eyewitness on their device. In April, the app also generated 7.5m page views (more than our Guardian iPhone app) so we're pretty happy with the results.

The user feedback has, likewise, been hugely positive, with comments ranging around the "pretty slick" and "absolutely breathtaking" level. Please do rate us and let us know what you think. I can promise you we do try and read every single one!

The app was conceived to showcase our amazing Eyewitness photography series and, to coincide with the UK iPad launch, we've asked one of our superb photographers, David Levene, to record his thoughts.

If you'd like to know more about the app, then please read my earlier blogpost here.

Do let me know your thoughts, whether direct feedback on the app itself or some thoughts as to how you'd like us to develop and enhance it. Please feel free to contact me at jonathon.moore@guardian.co.uk or leave your thoughts below.

Eyewitness app is evocative and added to the magical experience but this was more than overshadowed by the bug that ayoyo mentioned. The guardian iPhone app is one of my essential iPhone apps and the first that I tried on my iPad. I am gutted that it is not working :-(

In the meantime, I have been forced to try the times app. I prefer the guardian's more up to date news so I am eagerly awaiting either. A fix to the issue with the iPhone app on the iPad or - preferably - a dedicated iPad app soon.

I am sure that my faith will be rewarded

In common with other iPad users, I too am unable to access the Guardian app. on my iPad due to the locked-up questionnaire. Can the IT dept. at Guardian please get on to this sooner rather than later.

    Staff Staff

    Hi Champagnedrinker,

(I worked on the design of the Eyewitness app)

The eyewitness app was really designed to take advantage of the larger screen that the iPad offers. The eyewitness pictures tend to be so detailed that producing a version for the iPhone / iPod touch size screen may lead to a pretty frustrating app.

    Hi JonathonMoore and AndyBrockie,

Much as the eyewitness app is beautiful, it is obviously limited in that it contains no actual news and is also free.

Bearing this in mind, please can you get the tech team to fix the bug on the actual Guardian app (mentioned above by colinc, CloseDweller, Egideon and ayoyo). The bug results in an overlay appearing above The Guardian homescreen when running it on an iPad.

The overlay asks "Please take our reader survey?" - which is mildy amusing given the fact that i can't read the paper that i paid for.

I have been seriously considering paying the extra for The Times because I cannot believe that you have not fixed this issue with The Guardian, while you dedicate column inches on this website to promote the Eyewitness app.

It makes me wonder if any of the Guardian employees have actually been reading their own paper on the iPad or if they have merely been looking at the pretty pictures on Eyewitness and going elsewhere for their news?

Please fix it otherwise you are going to lose readers and other papers will steal a march on you in this new media territory.

Once fixed, please can you post an article explain if we will need to reinstall/update the app before it is fixed.

Thanks & looking forward to having it up and running again.

Agree with others re fixing the Guardian App which I use daily on my iPhone & now wish to use on my iPad. Same problem with reader survey screen. This has prompted me to comment for the first time as wish to use App while sat in garden in shade reading iPad. Make it perfect by fixing app please!!
