Holstein's Burgers Joining L.A. Talent at Cosmopolitan

Is Nancy Silverton's forthcoming artisan burger joint already influencing winter restaurant trends? Could be. Joining Jose Andres' two projects, David Myers' Comme Ca, and STK in opening at Las Vegas' Cosmopolitan Hotel this winter will be Holstein's, featuring burgers topped with natural, organic (surely not local) produce, plus bread and condiments that, similar to Short Order Burger, will all be made in-house. Jack Nicholson Eschews Chinatown for Mr. Chow; Bouchon Cameos on Entourage

Jack goes back to the old school

Christina Aguilera looked pissed while leaving Boa this week, though we're not sure the food was the issue. Meanwhile, Leonardo DiCaprio chatted up Charlize Theron at Teddy's, Gwen Stefani had a lady's night at Garden Market Patisserie, and Bouchon got some screen-time on Entourage, whose star was spotted at Little Dom's grabbing take-out. But our favorite star-sighting of the week pretty much ignored the existence of any Katsuyas, Boas, or STKs out there, as Jack Nicholson arrived in signature style at eighties star-staple Mr. Chow, with both an unlit cigarette and bright blue suit. Look below to see where else celebs have been going for their meals this week in L.A.

Taco Asylum To Twist Trends in Costa Mesa

Both the craft beer and taco-stand trends are heading to Costa Mesa with the opening of "taco asylum" this winter from the owners of Haven Gastropub. The horror-themed logo and insanity-inferring title are foreshadowing strange things to come, as owners promise tacos loaded with Indian paneer, octopus, and even scarier for some, vegetarian ingredients! Each week on the Food Chain, we ask a chef to describe a dish he or she recently enjoyed. The chef who prepared the dish responds and then picks his or her own memorable meal. On and on it goes. Last week, Tom Colicchio fell for chef Ting San's sakura-smoked hamachi at Oishii in Boston. What's had you begging for more lately, Ting?

Who: Ting San, chef-owner of Oishii

Alcove Cafe Planning Big Bar in Los Feliz

Alcove Cafe and Bakery is entering the cocktail war, with plans for Big Bar inside of its charming Los Feliz bungalow. Like The Skippy of mixology, this inside job will serve drinks full of "love" to the cafe and restaurant with a focus on freshness. Syrups will be made by hand, top-shelf liquor will be showcased, and all fruits and herbs will be fresh. This move follows similar embraces around town of the cocktail craze, like the new list at Nick and Stef's and The Raymond's recent hiring of the Tello/Demarest team to "create an entirely new cocktail culture." Whether or not Alcove has such inflated ambitions, going fresh and boozy is typically a smart step and should only add to Alcove's appeal for neighborhood residents in the evening.

Big Bar, coming to Alcove Cafe in September, 1929 Hillhurst Ave. Los Feliz. 323-644-0100.

Vitello's Trattoria Coming to Thousand Oaks

Vitello's, the Studio City pasta joint and live music venue where Robert Blake famously "forgot" his heater, appears to be producing an offspring over in Thousand Oaks. The new location is called Vitello's Trattoria and will be opened by Vince Restivo, a son of one of Vitello's founding brothers. The restaurant is due to open very soon in the closed home of Romio's Pizza and Pasta and is currently searching for broke actors servers.

Grassroots Group Targets LAUSD's Limp Lunches

Sorry kids...

After teaching six years of after-school programs across the city, this narrator can confirm that LAUSD junior-high students would eat Flamin' Hot Cheetos for breakfast, lunch, and dinner if left to their own devices. But that doesn't let the school system off the hook for serving crap and a grassroots group called Food for Lunch is trying to hold someone accountable and push change. The group has a very specific set of goals few parents or teachers could argue with.

Eataly’s Vegetable Butcher Revealed

Photo: Patrick McMullan

Much to many a carnivore’s consternation, unrestrained vegetable-eating is on the rise, and to stay on top of the trend, Eataly has seen fit to put a full-time vegetable butcher on the books. That’s right. A vegetable butcher. And not just your average, run-of-the-mill vegetable butcher, but a vegetable butcher who went to Harvard, attended the Culinary Institute of America, and who also happens to be the brilliant installation artist Jennifer Rubell. It was during a midnight conversation at Del Posto, says Rubell, that she and her friend Mario Batali brainstormed the idea. (Who knows? Maybe they had had a little wine.) “You know Mario,” she says. “No matter how late at night you have a conversation with him, it’s not like he forgets, and that’s how I became the vegetable butcher.”
