Football Weekly Extra: Premier League season preview

Football Weekly Extra: Premier League season preview

James and co return with their predictions for the new season and a look at the Championship and last night's internationals

Football Weekly returns with a director's-cut length Premier League preview show with host James Richardson and an old-school line-up of John Ashdown, Barry Glendenning and Sean Ingle.

First up we discuss the contenders for the title: Will Man City be hampered by having too many holding midfielders? Will Man Utd's ageing squad be a problem? Are Chelsea on the way down? Who comes out best in the Cole/Benayoun swap? What the hell is going on at Aston Villa? And has Barry really bet Sean £20 that Liverpool won't finish in the top six?

Meanwhile, is the relegation battle a foregone conclusion with the promoted teams all set to go back down, as John seems to think it is? Or could the likes of Birmingham and Wolves be dragged into the mire?

There's Championship talk, with the pod discussing Steve Coppell's shock departure and the chances of John's fancy, Burnley, for promotion and whether Pompey's bare-bones XI can escape the double-drop?

Meanwhile Sid Lowe joins on the phone with news of Spain's draw in Mexico and the latest transfer gossip from La Liga. And there's just about time to discuss last night's international friendlies - and for a certain pod member to suggest that Fabio Capello is the worst manager in his lifetime.

Have a listen and post your feedback below. We're also on iTunes, Facebook and Twitter, and if you enjoy this type of thing, get your daily dose of fooball with our tea-time email, The Fiver.

Missed you guys. Glad it's back. Means I don't have to even think about listening to the podcast by that "other" mob (with the smug, the potificator and various other idiots)

As a side note has the FW fantasy league been set up yet?

Anyone know if there's any truth in the rumours that Barca are having to pay Valencia much more than previously thought for Villa? Spanish teams seem to have a habit of not reading the small print.

New Football Weekly to accompany me as I pick my Fantasy Football team.
Pinch me, this can't be happening.

    Jimbo, you've been missed.
You're like the father I never had and never wanted but got anyway.
There's a compliment somewhere in there.

There is a Football Weekly league, if you were in it last year you can just update your team and add it. There is a Grauniad League too but I can't recall the code.

The code for my league is 285232-75216 (League of Gentlemen) just g00gle fantasy premier league. Royston Vasey XI are the team to watch.

Much as I would love Man U to fade away to Europa League obscurity, and God I would love that, I can't see it happening. There is definitely a slow-burning problem, with the financial disaster created by the Glazers and the ageing heart of the team, but I don't think it is going to go wrong this season. In fact, I think Chelsea may struggle more than Man U.

at last your back!!! bored of listening the other rubbish, hope you all had great times off and hope Barry will start his wars with other posters? will there be any video football weekly's this year?

    couple of football questions

    1) will any of the promoted teams survive this season? i've got nearly £150 in various bets with friends that newcastle will go down as the team they have this season is pretty much the same as last time they went down but minus Viduka, Owen & Martins and i don't think Ameobi, Carroll or Lovenkrads will score enough to keep them up

    2) can any team surprise this year and perform above expectations? my money is on Villa to apoint Sv£n and be lucky to finish 10th or higher so someone has to finish in there traditional 6th place, my money is on Stoke to jump up high

finally 3 (i know Jimbo doesn't read long posts on air) Can Genoa finish 4th this season after some good signings? Veluso looks like a good buy (sorry Barry its a serie a question!!)

Oh dear. Sean, you're not Irish, and you have a gambling problem. 16 minutes in the new season and you're back down the bookies for your research.

Chelsea will struggle this season. Their back line consists of Alex (O.K), Ivanovich (hasn't played in that position for a while) and J.T, who is just about to have his worst ever season in a Chelsea shirt. They have Bruma and Mancienne too but both lack top level experience.

They need two new centre-backs, one to replace Carvalho and one to spare JT the Carragheresque season he may have to endure

I've come to loathe contemporary football (the money, the cynical marketing, the making of fatuous dim celebrities) to the extent I projectile vomit every time I see a man in shorts. However, I bloody love football weekly. Do you think it's possible to reconcile the two?

I've just been reading the book "Man SKills" by Nick Harper - you are mentioned in the acknowledgements (in a banterish-deragatory style)! What link have you to this fine book?

My own link is that my wife knows the girlfriend (or wife? Obviously I don't know them!) of Mr Harper.

    p.s. thank goodness for FW

John Terry probably won't finish the season in the Chelsea first team, but not due to loss of form, more that he'll be in prison for some tabloid-induced naughtiness.
