"I wanna hold you, wanna hold you tight, get teenage kicks all through the night," John and Edward Grimes declare on track 10 of their first album, which will have Undertones fans vowing vengeance on the X Factor finalists. Yet Teenage Kicks is the only song of Planet Jedward's 11 cover versions that suits their abilities. It's no insult to the original to admit that Jedward's ineptness works tolerably well on a song that's all about adolescent gawkiness, though it would be stretching a point to say I'd ever want to hear it again. As for the rest: whoever chose the material astutely picked songs Neanderthal enough to withstand the twins' have-a-go yapping. The Ghostbusters theme, Robbie Williams's Rock DJ, the Beasties' Fight for Your Right to Party – all survive unscathed, even if the "best porno mag" bit has been bleeped out of the latter. Off you go then, boys.

As long as I don't actually have to endure any of their "product", I truly admire their talent-free fame grab. They're not singers, or even entertainers, they are pure hype! They've got a great look and a comically vacuous style that the most skilled comedy act would struggle to emulate.

Go for it boys, get it while you can!

I caught some of the interview on the Jonathan Ross Radio 2 show last weekend, I have a problem listening to Ross when he's trying to be funny but I really felt for him while trying to interview these two erratic twitching distracticons. I wonder who would actually go out and buy this? The only hope is that youngster will listen to it and discover the Beastie boys or the Undertones.

Why is the limited space in the Film & Music section being wasted reviewing this? Was there really nothing more worthy of review released this week? If you're going to start including joke reviews at least get Charlie Brooker or someone to do it.

Why bother reading it in the first place if it bothers you that much?

Well if it was just another blog page I really wouldn't care as space isn't an issue, but the FIlm & Music section is about the only thing I keep buying the weekday Guardian for. As they only have space for a small number of album reviews each week, wasting one of them on a target as easy as this just seems a shame.

I am Irish, and as such, I feel slightly responsible for these two muppets..we could have done more to stop them.. we could have done so much more
    .

You said it, fella. Where were you, eh?

And to explain to those who are wondering why this album was reviewed: it's partly because they're the pop-culture curiosity of the year, and partly because July and August are devoid of major (or even deserving minor) releases.

I didn't actually read the review.

No problem with Jedward fans (pre-teenage girls mostly I assume) but let's face it, how many of them are Guardian readers?

And as others have pointed out, the space could have been used to review an artist not associated with an already massively hyped show.

How the fuck are the rights of those songs released in order for this shite to be recorded?

    Undertones!
    Beastie Boys!
    Ray Parker Jr!

    Hang your heads in shame.

I think this review has been written to remind us all of the horrors that are out there mesquerading as music and as such we should rise up and crush them, in the name of all that is good and decent.

Consider it a warning, not a review.

I thought Caroline Sullivan might have been kinder to Jedward.

After all, like them, she happily makes her living without showing any discernable talent in her chosen field.

Hmm. Can you honestly say there have been no releases in the last month or so which deserved a review more than this but couldn't be fitted in? And what relevance does being a pop culture curiosity have to the album reviews page? It's no great shakes, and I generally think F&M is very good and gets the high/low culture ratio right, I just think it's a shame in this case.

sharoncasey - yes, but the Irish gave us Chris de Burgh, Foster & Allen and Daniel O`Donnell, so what do you expect?
Never underestimate the utter dross the `great British public` will go for.
I expect women want to mother them - me, I`d add an `s` to that sentence.

What if they manufactured a hype and no journalist came?

Louis Walsh usually made some effort in choosing material for his acts but this is a fairly mindless selection from the pub jukebox/karaoke night. This stuff is always about a quick buck but Planet Jedward does'nt even pretend to be decent pop,You would almost feel sorry for the delusional pair seeing as they've chucked in school for a career they've been hyped up to think they (will) have.

I hear you, Saposkat. Planet Jedward is a masterpiece of cynicism. I don't blame Jedward themselves, because they're only doing what any 18-year-olds would do if they were offered the chance to make a record, but I do wonder where Simon Cowell would draw the line. Is there anyone he wouldn't exploit?

    Caroline,

Think you're underestimating the tastes of 18 year olds! And I had no idea I was the same age as them, that's scary. They look about 15, maximum.

I think the worst thing about Jedward is that they're a mega-irritating, bright and supposedly fun and optimistic face for a really cynical ploy. Pretty upsetting.
