Tories rejoice – Disraeli is the new Obama-cool

DisraeliTories who worry they have no one to match the cool of Barack Obama, look no further than the history books. At least according to the American Daily Beast columnist Simon Doonan, who argues it is time to embrace Benjamin Disraeli as a modern icon. I’m not sure the Conservatives are ready for this interpretation:

“Benjamin Disraeli was a wise-cracking, crazy genius who, despite a penchant for wearing his hair in Shirley Temple ringlets and sporting canary yellow velvet waistcoats, managed to claw his way to prominence and become, on two separate occasions, the first and only Jewish prime minister of Great Britain. How Obama-cool is that? OK, so he became a bit of an imperialist asshole along the way, but who said cool people were warm and fuzzy 24/7? (Paging Sid Vicious!)”
