Does John Bercow have enough Tory seconders?
Further to my point last night about John Bercow’s unequivocal pledge to publish a list of his 15 supporters, someone has got in touch to suggest that he may not find enough Conservatives to make his nomination for Speaker valid. Can this be true? Or rather does it matter? As I understand the rules – and it would help if someone could clarify – the only requirement is that at least three of his supporters must be from a party other than his own. He has no difficulty there. The rules don’t appear to set a minimum requirement for support from a candidate’s own party.
Jonathan Isaby and Steve Richards have set out their cases today for Speaker Bercow, which are certainly worth a read.
