Are the wealthy about to be Valley-ed?

A sign! A sign! I gather the Treasury was impressed by my colleague Mary Riddell’s excellent column this morning on the challenges facing Alistair Darling and the inspiration he might find in David Lloyd George’s “People’s Budget”. Funnily enough, Polly Toynbee is keen on the wily Welsh crook as well. Is this a coincidence? Or should we look out for variations of a super-tax tomorrow? 50pc on incomes over £100,000 maybe? Scrapping the upper-earnings limit in NI? Scrapping higher rate pension relief? CGT on house sales above a certain value? A new higher band for council tax? All clad in a soak the rich conceit that bolsters the Labour grassroots and leaves the Tories facing a tax headache: how high is too high for Dave and George?
