Mark Webber won the British grand prix at Silverstone and then hit out at his treatment by the Red Bull team. Congratulated on his victory over the in-car radio by the team principal, Christian Horner, Webber responded by saying: "Well done guys – not bad for a No2 driver."

Lewis Hamilton came home in second, while his McLaren team-mate Jenson Button was fourth, having battled his way up from 14th on the grid.

It was a day of mixed fortunes for Red Bull, however, who saw Sebastian Vettel slide from pole position down to 24th, after being overtaken off the start line by Webber and then suffer a puncture. The German eventually recovered to finish seventh.

"It was a great race for Mark," said Horner afterwards, adding that he didn't see anything wrong with the tussle between Webber and Vettel at the start. "It was just racing between the two of them, I was perfectly happy with how they conducted themselves through the first turn. It's a great team result. We win together and we lose together."

Asked about tension between the pair, Horner said: "There's so little to choose between them and it's a good problem to have with two such competitive drivers. The most important thing is not whether it's Sebastian or Mark but that we had the winning car here. Mark can be very happy with his victory today."

Webber was diplomatic on the subject of his rivalry with Vettel, preferring to concentrate on his win. "Maybe there's a bloke upstairs," he said. "I did the best job I could. I made a good start and I was very keen to make it my corner and it worked out well for me."

Vettel blamed his clutch for his bad start and felt that his problems began when Hamilton's car accidently touched his, appearing to cause the puncture – though Vettel said it wasn't intentional.

"Mark had a better start so I moved to the right to try and defend but he was there and there was no point in doing anything stupid," said Vettel.

Asked about the atmosphere between himself and Webber he said: "I obviously focus on myself and so does he. I have my opinion and for sometimes good and bad you get to know someone better. I've learned my lesson and I look after myself."

Hamilton's second place allowed him to maintain his lead at the top of the drivers' standings. Button, the reigning world champion, is now 12 points behind Hamilton in pursuit of the title, with Webber up to third, above Vettel.

The Mercedes of Nico Rosberg was third, with Williams's Rubens Barrichello fifth and Kamui Kobayashi's Sauber in sixth. The German quartet of Vettel, Adrian Sutil, Michael Schumacher and Nico Hülkenberg rounded out the top 10.
