The Resident Coordinator (RC) system aims to bring together the different UN agencies to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of operational activities at the country level. Resident Coordinators lead UN country teams in more than 130 countries and are the designated representatives of the Secretary-General for development operations. The Resident Coordinators play an important role in coordinating and representing the UN system at the country level. Change Agent: Rebecca Wabwoba, UN Somalia
December 2008 A suicide bombing rocked the United Nations building in Hargesia, Somalia on 29 October 2008, killing two staff members and severely injuring two more. Rebecca Wabwoba, the Information Officer in the Resident Coordinator’s Office for Somalia, survived the attack. Here, she recounts how the ordeal affected her and ultimately strengthened her commitment. “The way to show them that we are not defeated is to continue working,” she says, “to bring dignity and hope to men, women and children living in difficult circumstances.”

Change Agent: Siphiwe Kandiero, UN Malawi
April 2008 From UNDP’s Bulletin: A day in the life of Siphiwe Kandiero, an executive assistant in the Resident Coordinator’s office in Lilongwe. In an effort to Deliver as One, UN Agencies in Malawi have already begun working in clusters. Even though Malawi is not one of the pilot countries, the UN Country Team has begun the groundwork for a joint programme and common premises.
