Getting to Know the Now Very Wealthy Natalie Massenet

Last week Richemont, the company that owns brands like Cartier and Montblanc, bought the remaining 67 percent stake in Net-a-Porter, valuing the company at $533 million. Net-a-Porter founder Natalie Massenet, who stays on as CEO, is thought to have made around $76 million from the deal. But who is Natalie Massenet? A woman with a very good idea, leading what seems like a charmed life. The daughter of a Chanel model, Massenet grew up in Paris and L.A. and now lives in Notting Hill, London with her French hedge-fund manager husband and their two daughters. They have homes in Somerset and Paris and vacation in Ibiza. Also, she believes in the self-help book The Secret.

Katie Holmes Might Be a Fan of the Sweatpants Trend

Photo: Arnaldo Magnani/Getty Image

Katie Holmes, who famously popularized boyfriend jeans two years ago, was snapped in New York today sporting the latest trend in casual bottoms — sweatpants — on the set of her new film Son of No One.

These may be part of a costume or a personal sartorial choice. Either way, can she do for these what she did for baggy jeans?

Are Fashion Companies Wasting Too Much Time on iPhone Apps?

Instead of focusing on device-specific apps, experts suggest fashion brands focus on creating websites for mobile devices that work well and are easily navigable. After all, the mobile site can reach everyone with a browser on their phone, but not everyone who cares about fashion has an iPhone! As the Observer reminded us last week, many in the industry prefer the BlackBerry (Anna Wintour can often be seen using hers at the shows). And those people certainly aren't waiting in line for iPads anytime soon. [Business of Fashion]

Maria Cornejo and Calvin Klein’s Francisco Costa Would Like to Cast Older, Less Waifish Models

Kristen McMenamy in Calvin Klein's fall 2010 show.

The hooplah over curves has led to some changes in runway and editorial castings. More realistically sized models are landing work that might have a few years ago gone to a 16-year-old waif. But it's unclear if these are fleeting changes or true signs of a new era for fashion in the new decade. Designer Francisco Costa of Calvin Klein and Maria Cornejo revealed they're hungry for change in a panel discussion with the Washington Post's Robin Givhan on Friday. Costa said he had been afraid of changing the casting direction for his runway shows, since Calvin Klein himself "started" the "waif movement." But he's trying to turn the tide, which is why for his fall 2010 show, he cast models like 39-year-old Stella Tennant and 43-year-old Kristen McMenamy.

He also wants to do a street casting. »

Loose Powder Banned in Outer Space; Blondes Make More Than Brunettes

MAKEUP
• Four female astronauts traveled into space today with the space shuttle Discovery. Japanese astronaut Naoko Yamazaki mentioned that the women all bring makeup on their voyages, because they want to look good when they communicate on television. HAIR
• The British journal Economics Letters reported that blondes are paid 7 percent more on average than brunettes. They also said that when certain factors were removed, like height, weight, and education, blondes statistically still received higher pay than brunettes. [Telegraph UK]

Hermès’s Horse-Hoof-Inspired Jewelry to Start at $23,675

Photo: Courtesy of Hermes

Last week Hermès unveiled a high-end, high-tech saddle that costs $9,100. Today, WWD reveals that for the price of about two and a half of those you can buy one pair of clip-on rose gold and black jade earrings, which cost $23,675. They're part of a fourteen-piece jewelry collection Hermès prefers to call "haute bijouterie," which Pierre Hardy designed. Pieces are inspired by horse hooves. “Hermès is not a very precious universe,” Hardy explained of his influences. But in fact it is, as prices for this line top out at $880,000 for the diamond necklace. All pieces come in a custom-made alligator box, mat made of real zebra skin every eccentric person should own for her vanity not included.

Lara Stone to Replace Sasha Pivovarova in Another Beauty Campaign

Giorgio Armani Cosmetics recently confirmed Lara Stone as the face of its fall 2010 beauty campaign. This is the second beauty campaign in which she replaces Sasha Pivovarova, the last face of the Armani line along with Jessica Stam. Several weeks ago Prada revealed Lara would replace Sasha as the face of the Infusion d’Iris fragrance. Sasha had been the face of that scent since 2007. Lara posed for a gorgeous beauty spread in the March issue of Vogue. [In Style UK]

Heidi Klum Feels Comfortable Being Naked in Front of Her Parents

She tells the new issue of Tatler: "I grew up in a very easy-going family where my parents were always naked ... My parents are still naked. I mean, it's not like we're hippies and we run around naked, but if they happened to be in their room changing or something or someone comes out of the shower, they're not, like, 'Oh my God. No. Close the door.'" [HuffPo]

Sweatpants Trend to Give Those Who ‘Get It’ Feelings of Superiority

Designer sweatpants hit the runways of Alexander Wang and Isabel Marant a couple of years ago. They've since appeared on the runways of Bottega Veneta ($290 to $360), Michael Kors ($995, but they're cashmere), and rag & bone ($255), and made a strong showing for both the spring and fall 2010 seasons. The Wall Street Journal, which has just gotten wind of this trend, is dubious, asking, "Sweatpants with stilettos?" Yes, sweatpants with stilettos.

It's not a perfect trend, but so few are in their incarnation. One trend analyst pointed to leggings. When they came out, everyone thought only fashion riffraff would wear those, and then they became absolutely huge, and prices easily soared to four figures for the best buttery-leather pairs. In the past five years, the paper might have asked: "Leggings with mesh panels?" "Booties with open toes?" "Florals for fall?" Now we can definitively say yes, yes, and yes.

Michelle Obama Breaks Out the White Pants

This morning, the First Lady wore a pink cardigan over a printed button-down and white pants to the annual Easter Egg Roll at the White House. Yesterday, she attended Easter services at the Allen Chapel AME Church in Washington, D.C. in a Peter Soronen dress, which we first saw her wear in 2008, and on Friday, she visited the United States Trade Representatives office in a coral dress by Michael Kors. See the full looks in the Michelle Obama Look Book.

Gisele’s Complete First Postpartum Advertising Campaign Reveals More of Her Perfect Figure

Photo: Courtesy of Colcci

Vogue said their "Shape" issue cover girl Gisele Bündchen had "skinny thighs" when they visited her apartment to interview her and caught her breast-feeding. If you doubted them, her first postpartum ad campaign for Brazilian label Colcci is out in full and confirms that assertion while revealing more of her always-stunning figure. The images were shot just six and a half weeks after Gisele had baby Benjamin. We asked the Cut's resident retouching expert what sort of photo manipulation may have been at play in these shots. They said, "Her skin is Photoshopped, and that solid backdrop makes retouching her shape super easy and hard to pinpoint. Mostly it's her face that scares me here, as her eyes are pointed different directions."

Get First Dibs on Zac Posen for Target at the 24-Hour Pop-up Shop

Zac Posen for Target tiger-print dress, $39.99.

In what has become a happy local tradition, Target is launching a New York pop-up shop April 15 for its Zac Posen collaboration more than a week before the line hits stores nationwide. But though the pop-ups for previous Target collabs like Anna Sui, Rodarte, and Liberty of London each lasted three or four days, the Zac Posen preview will only be open for 24 hours. We suspect this is a reaction to the anticipated high demand; the Liberty for London pop-up was forced to close a day earlier than scheduled after it sold out of most items.

Marion Cotillard May Have Gotten Carla Bruni’s Role in That Woody Allen Film

Carla Bruni said in November that she made some sort of pact with Woody Allen to appear in his next film. Now the Daily Mail reports that Marion Cotillard will play France's First Lady in the movie, and Carla will probably get a cameo role. According to the paper, Allen realized he couldn't hire a real First Lady because she will probably have better things to do (like mingle with NYU students!) than make a movie at any given time, and would probably prioritize them over his project. Ten Officers Injured in American Apparel Sale Riot in London

Any sample-sale veteran is familiar with the feelings associated with shopping them: determination, frustration, entitlement, attachment, and sometimes loss. The masses unfamiliar with sale etiquette might be unprepared for the emotional tensions. And so it may have been when 2,000 people showed up to the American Apparel sale in east London on Friday, tension turned to aggression, and a riot broke out on the scene. Ten officers were injured, though not seriously, and three people were arrested. Organizers responded on Facebook, saying they found the incident "overwhelming and humbling," and that they had "never witnessed anything like it and are disappointed and sorry that it happened." The sale was rescheduled for the weekend and today, with extra security. Judging by the video, it was all much scarier than it sounds.

Close Friends Shocked by Alexander McQueen’s Suicide

Though Alexander McQueen had reached many emotional low points in his career, his closest friends never would have suspected to receive word on February 11 that the designer had hanged himself in his London flat. Trino Verkade, his first employee, and Sarah Burton, his only design assistant, headed to his apartment after receiving a hysterical call from his housekeeper, picking up his close friend Shaun Leane along the way. Leane had known McQueen for twenty years, and spent many nights out drinking with him, where an idea for a collection would be born as a sketch on a bar mat.

Personally, Mr. Leane didn’t believe that Mr. McQueen was dead at age 40, and in that way, though goodness knows he had seen the hurts pile up at his friend’s door. It wasn’t any wonder he always moved to another house after a breakup, Mr. Leane said later.

... He told Ms. Verkade and Ms. Burton that the Spanish-speaking housekeeper must have been misheard. “It’s just a scare. He’s going to be all right.”
