The Week the College-Hoops Coaching Carousel Started to Spin

In a week that began with AAU coaches basically admitting that recruiting is corrupt, some of the local colleges found themselves at various stages in the coach-hiring process. St. John's, for example, got turned down by Billy Donovan, and then — when it looked like they'd found their man — by Paul Hewitt, too. Fordham, meanwhile, was much more efficient, hiring Tom Pecora on Wednesday. (During his introductory press conference, Pecora made it clear that he's got the AAU-coach seal of approval, but not in a sleazy way.) But what happened this week that didn't set alumni message boards ablaze?

Lots of things, one of which involved nerds. »

Don’t Give Up On the NCAA Tournament Just Yet

Yes, we know you're still reeling from Syracuse's and Cornell's losses in the Sweet Sixteen, but that doesn't mean you can't still have some fun rooting against Duke. The tourney continues tonight, and the odds are excellent that you'll be wrapping up dinner and heading to the bar right around the time the Duke-Purdue game is nearing halftime: Some playful sneering at Mike Krzyzewski is better than an after-dinner mint. The early games feature Evan Turner and Ohio State against Tennessee, and Baylor versus St. Mary's; the other late game is Michigan State against the bracket busters that are Northern Iowa. Speaking of brackets: As of this moment, the leader in our Sports Section bracket pool is an entry called "Bongs," from an entrant named "Mr. Brooksington," who we assume is a cat. The pool winner gets a free post on this site; "Bongs" has Ohio State in the Final Four, so you know whom to root for tonight. We're pretty excited to have a post on this site with the byline "Bongs" or "Mr. Brooksington," all told.

By the Way, the Yankees Still Consider Joba Chamberlain a Starter

Good news for people who like having the same conversation over and over again: Brian Cashman said yesterday that the Yankees still consider Joba Chamberlain to be a starting pitcher, but since there's only one available spot in the rotation and he didn't win it, "he's a starter in the bullpen." Meaning we get to revive the starter-or-reliever debate again next spring, or when someone in the rotation gets hurt this season, or really any time Phil Hughes has a bad game. [Newsday]

Former Christ the King Coach Charged With Child Rape

A nasty story in the Daily News this morning: Bob Oliva, the Christ the King basketball coach who helped shepherd Lamar Odom and Jayson Williams (among others) toward the NBA, was indicted on child rape charges in Boston. The indictment stems from an incident in Boston in the seventies — Oliva resigned from the job in January 2009 in response to increasing allegations — but the accuser is not alone: Several former players for Oliva testified before the grand jury in Boston last month, including former major-league pitcher Allen Watson. If convicted, Oliva faces life in prison.

The Rangers Somehow Stay in the Playoff Picture

It's very possible that, two weeks from now, the Rangers will still be outside of the playoff picture and last night's game will prove little more than a footnote on a disappointing season. But if they somehow go on a probably-too-late run, and if Boston gives them some help, and if Atlanta helps them out a little, too, we'll look at the ending of last night's game as the moment they gave themselves one last shot.

Former Grace Under Fire Star Ruins ’Cuse NCAA Dreams

Before Syracuse fans — and, by extension, half the staff of this magazine — jump out the window this morning, remember that this season, by any objective measure, was a resounding success. The Orange weren't even ranked to begin the season, and they won 30 games and the Big East. All year, coach Jim Boeheim expressed befuddlement that all this was happening: He had not seen this coming at all. If you would have told a Syracuse fan back in mid-November, right after the exhibition loss to LeMoyne, that the Orange would make it to the Sweet Sixteen, they would have been ecstatic. See? It's not so bad. Come down off the ledge. There, there ... now, can we talk about the 63–59 loss to Butler? Hey, get back down here!

The sad details. »

The NCAA Tourney Is Back for More Chaos

Okay, three days off was about all you could handle: The NCAA Tournament, in the midst of a possible final doomed run of thrills before the 96-team pencil pushers destroy the whole thing, returns tonight. We've got all the local angles in this first day, First, 'CUUUUUSE plays Butler at 7:07 p.m. The Orange will be without center Arinze Onuaku but are still favored; they've been one of the more impressive teams of the tourney so far, but will need to step it up tonight and in a potential Elite Eight game with dangerous Kansas State. Then, late tonight, the big one: big evil one-year-and-done rule-bending Kentucky versus Ivy League darlings Cornell, starting at approximately 9:57. It's the signature game of the tournament so far, Education versus Soulless Hoops Factor, Hard Work versus Quick Fix, Jacob versus Smokey. Everyone who isn't already a Kentucky fan will be pulling hard for Cornell, which is probably why Kentucky will win by 30. The other games: West Virginia versus Washington, and Kansas State versus Xavier. Make sure to see who you picked in the pool, and enjoy.
