Devil May Cry DVD From the food gags to the enormous stack of hack-and-slash clichés that form the show's script, “dumb and contrived” are really the best words for this. Just repress the urge to “press A to scroll through the text” because sadly, this is not a video game, and this narrative oatmeal does not work outside of cutscenes.
Glass Mask Sub.DVD While both the positive and negative influences on Maya make for interesting story and character development, it also shines a big spotlight on the second half of the season's main flaw: the inability to bring a satisfying or timely end to any relationship.
Tears to Tiara DVD part 2 Though it only occasionally shakes the pervasive feel of its fantasy RPG origins, the second half of this mix of Christian and Greek mythology with Arthurian legend shines when it does. If you at least tolerated the first half, you should be quite pleased with the second half.
Bamboo Blade DVD 2 This is exactly what a great sports show should be like. It's not really about kendo, it's about a bunch of young girls in love with the game. It is a wonderful little story that deserves all the praise that can be dished out for what it has to give.
Dragonaut DVD part 2 It's amazing what actually developing a coherent plot and more fully exploring characters can do for a series that, through most of its first 13 episodes, was a train wreck. But does a much stronger second half make weathering a weak first half worthwhile? In this case, the answer is a marginal “yes.”
Soul Eater Part 1 This title's use of classic formula has a delicious sharp edge on it that slices in and hooks deep from the start. You can hardly do better than Soul Eater.
Kirameki Project DVD 1 Amusingly odd, this quirky, fan service-laden mix of cutesiness and classic giant robot action struggles with its balance of parody and drama but looks good in the process. It stands quite a bit off the beaten path.
