^ I suppose it's possible he read to volume 3, which had the one and only kiss scene between Ash and Eiji in the whole series, which somehow made the great story and characters seem irrelevant because two male characters kissed for 1/4 of a page. Honestly, yaoi is the last thing I'd classify Banana Fish as, it has 1 male mildly romantic scene every 5 volumes (which is usually just them talking and at best hugging), it's definitely an action/political thriller worthy of everyone's attention who can deal with a guy liking another guy but never really acting on it due to how the story's written.

Anyway, here are some links to "The Top Ten Best Worst Manga", which was written by Jason Thompson for the Overlooked Manga Festival (which has reasons why Banana Fish should be read on it btw):
Part 1
Part 2
Although these might be classifiable as "so bad it's good"

Haou Airen. I still regret reading it. Its been a long time since and I still regret it. I feel like I lost something important in the process.

It has quite possibly the worst male lead I've ever seen in a shoujo. It could have been some cheesy ecchi fluff manga. I would rather it have been that instead of trying to be some intense drama and failing at it. The logic the characters use and the actions make no sense whatsoever and arent even explained properly so the whole time I'm sitting there Wtfing at everything.

If you wanna read it for the smut go ahead. Keep in mind that its not even kind to the smut lovers. You don't get your happy ending here. Not even after all that heavy drama. It literally ends with one of the main characters in tears.

The tragedy isnt even well done. It feels so random. There was barely any foreshadowing. I mean, if you look back there is one scene. But they at least should have showed the dude more. Let us know what he was thinking. He literally disappears but shows up for the ending.

Volume 4 is what destroyed the series. From then on it gets worse and worse like a never ending spiral downhill. I don't know why I even bothered. It definitely wasnt the smut scenes because those just pissed me off. It looks like rape but then she's enjoying it? Then the things he says to her. He acts as if she's an object. Its an insult and I'm shocked so many females like this thing. It makes me ashamed to be a woman.

Terrible. I just can't get over this. Never has a manga filled me with so much rage. I can't believe this thing tries to make my sympathize with a character who is clearly a villain and in the wrong. I simply cannot stand it when the whole "BOO HOO I HAD A SAD PAST SO I TURNED OUT LIKE A JACKASS SO ITS OK IF I RAPE AND KILL AND TREAT THIS GIRL I SUPPOSEDLY LOVE LIKE CRAP BUT I'LL CHANGE LATER SO YOU can't HATE ME ANYMORE YAAAAH" thing is used and people fall for it.

I need to go read some good josei or yaoi fluff or play my DS a bit to calm myself.

Later.
