Fafner BD+DVD Unutterably sad in places, thoughtful in others, and filled with mecha battles and the harsher realities of war, Fafner takes a more serious look at what happens when only children can pilot machines of war than the wish-fulfillment variety of giant robot shows.
[C] BD+DVD An uneasy mixture of unique ideas, off-the-beaten-track ambitions, and dully unimaginative narrative mechanics.
King of Thorn BD+DVD This apocalyptic story reinterprets its source manga moreso than adapting it, resulting in a relentlessly-paced action/horror movie which has definite imperfections but in some important senses improves on the original story.
Okami HD Okami is beautiful regardless of platform, and this is not its first rerelease, but in widescreen and high definition every inch of it is beyond compare. Seeing it like this we are reminded that no one has done it better, even though they've had six years to try.
Oresama Teacher GN 9 & 10 Overall these volumes provide more faint smiles than outright laughs and on the whole, Oresama Teacher is fairly unremarkable.
Case Closed GN 44 With an engaging hero, a combination of logic and knowledge, and stylized but pleasant art, Case Closed continues to be a diverting read. It won't fill the gap left by Tokyopop's Kindaichi Case Files, but if you're looking for something a bit mysterious, you could do far worse than Case Closed.
Wolf GN Perhaps Wolf's greatest appeal should be in the fact that this is a sports manga in English, and not only that, but a good one.
Dorohedoro GN 7 It's got fighting action, personal drama, quirky humor, and science crossed with sorcery, with no particular aspect overshadowing any of the others.
Skip Beat! GN 29 With it's 29th volume, Skip Beat continues to charge ahead as one of the most enjoyable shoujo series available in English.
A Devil and Her Love Song GN 3 & 4 A Devil and Her Love Song manages to be set in school without being just another school story. While it has its flaws, like crowded pages and villains who reform too quickly, its heart is absolutely in the right place.
Voices of a Distant Star (manga) While it does not achieve the full dramatic power of the original anime, this fleshed-out manga adaptation is still a strong story with a good amount of emotional appeal. It should satisfy most fans of the anime.
