Though the series still looks great, the storytelling gets messy as it splits into too many separate plot threads and struggles to achieve the epic feel of earlier Bones series. Fantastic visuals and a few strong scenes are the only things elevating this one above a mediocre level.
Maybe these OVA episodes are dumb and pointless, but two episodes of harmless goofing off is infinitely preferable to a return to the Japanese Cliché Torture of Linebarrels' main body.
Another two hundred pages of eye-
At the outset, this 2004 effort from the creator of Kiddy Grade looks like it will be a typical magical girl series, but this “tale told darkly” aims at mature audiences and becomes heavier and more sophisticated as it progresses. One does not have to be a fan of the magical girl genre to appreciate this one.
Ultimately the reason season one is good is the same reason each of the following seasons is: the thrill of competition, and its ability to make us feel it. Beware the ugly CG, though.
