Site Reliability Engineer

You're a ninja: coding by day, systems engineering by night, and a little of everything else in between.  You thrive on keeping massive-scale web products running smoother than an 16-year old Tomintoul.  You know your bitmasks, your LACP, and your heredocs.  You found yourself enjoying systems work after a distinguished development career, or vice-versa, and now you're making the two worlds meet with the utmost of care.

StumbleUpon brings the best of the web to our users, and we're 10+ billion stumbles into history.  You're going to bring us to the 100 billion "stumble" mark.  Quickly.  This position provides the backbone of StumbleUpon's services: Participate in the creation and analysis of new products, platforms, applications, and tools.  Own the reliability of the user-facing experience.  Dive into memory stomps and CSS alignment issues alike.  You are the front line and last word when it comes to StumbleUpon's face to the world.  Please apply only if you want to raise the bar for all future engineers at StumbleUpon.

Qualifications:

  • 3-5+ years of C, C++, or Java experience
  • 3-5+ years of scripting experience: Perl, Python, shell (PHP a plus)
  • Previous large-scale systems engineering or administration exposure
  • Release engineering skill: SVN, Git, branching strategies, file-vs-delta concepts
  • Solid algorithms and data structures background
  • LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP) experience highly desired

Senior Software Engineer

StumbleUpon is seeking a self-directed Senior Software Engineer with a desire to build scalable and interesting web applications. We are seeking someone who is comfortable writing efficient database schemas, clean and efficient back-end code, and has passionate opinions about user interface and interaction. The Developer will be working to design and implement new StumbleUpon features and improve the overall experience for millions of people. The Developer will be part of a team that works on diverse, site-spanning projects involving community-facing tools, video, web services, security, anti-spam, user-to-user interaction, advertiser network, and more. Projects will be for both internal tools and highly-used public-facing products.


Qualifications:

  • 5+ years software development experience
  • 5+ years MySQL programming experience
  • 5+ years PHP
  • Linux/Unix expertise is essential
  • Experience with version control systems such as Subversion or CVS
  • Intermediate to advanced HTML/DOM experience (ability to understand and slightly tweak UI team's output)

Research Engineer

StumbleUpon is seeking a talented research engineer to help us improve the quality of our recommendation engine. This will involve research, analysis and implementation of algorithms and data elicitation methods that improve recommendation relevance as user feedback occurs. The data source: Explicit preference and markup data on 29M websites from over 7.5M websurfers. In total over 9 billion detailed stumble/rating/review records are available to analyze. Responsibilities:

  • Research and implement changes to improve recommender quality
  • Help invent new heuristics and algorithms for information distribution and content discovery
  • Use statistical methods and machine learning to characterize user preference
  • Investigate data mining and concept extraction strategies using classification and clustering
  • Create visualizations for complex datasets
  • Explore new data collection methods, both explicit and implicit


Qualifications:

  • MSc or Phd in Computer Science or related field
  • 3+ yrs of applied research experience related to recommender systems, computational linguistics, data analysis, statistical learning methods, or search
  • Experience with basic statistical methods such as modeling multi-variate distributions, hypothesis testing, bayesian inference, simulation modeling, time series analysis
  • Experience working with large data sets (100GB+)
  • Knowledge of text classification and clustering

Advertising Sales – New York, NY, United States

StumbleUpon is seeking an exceptional Advertising Sales representative to help grow the company’s East Coast client base.  Reporting directly to the CFO, the successful candidate will possess a proven track record in consistently delivering direct sales revenue. The ideal candidate will have established relationships with our target markets and be able to immediately close new business. Additionally he/she will be capable of growing existing client relationships for repeat sales to successfully meet and exceed quarterly revenue targets.  The successful candidate must be comfortable working remotely and demonstrate the ability to proactively manage our East Coast interests. Responsibilities:

  • Lead the company’s East Coast revenue generating activities (main target markets include NYC, DC, Boston, Chicago and Miami)
  • Add new business to our existing East Coast client base – identify prospects, qualify leads and close business
  • Provide local support to our existing client base – work closely with our account management, financial & engineering teams in San Francisco to effectively manage client accounts
  • Provide market feedback to SU Product Managers & engineering team on all advertising matters
  • Effectively manage your time and company resources to meet corporate expectations for revenue and growth in target market


Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 5 years direct sales or account management experience in either the traditional and digital media (agency or publisher) industries, with at least 3 years in a sales management role
  • Demonstrated ability to think, act and lead strategically while managing the execution of the sales process
  • A thorough understanding of digital and traditional media players in and around the East Coast, with established relationships with agencies and advertising client decision makers
  • Strong organizational skills, proactive business style, excellent communication and strong presentation skills – this is a client facing position
  • Highly self-motivated and able to manage multiple tasks with minimal supervision
  • Proficiency in Office software (Excel, PowerPoint, Word) & Salesforce CRM
  • Strong proposal writing experience is desired with ability to compile and analyze campaign performance data and metrics
