Scandale!

Rumors About Katie Lee Joel and Yigal Azrouël Persist

Rumors About Katie Lee Joel and Yigal Azrouël Persist

Photo: Getty Images

Earlier this month, news broke that Katie Lee Joel and husband of five years Billy Joel were divorcing. "Page Six" suggested this week that Katie Lee's "friendship" with attractive heterosexual fashion designer Yigal Azrouël contributed to the split. Though Katie's rep said her relationship with the designer had nothing to do with the breakup, Us Weekly suggests otherwise in the new issue on newsstands today. A source close to Azrouël tells the magazine, “he definitely fooled around with Katie, but he wasn’t exclusive.” Leave it to Us to lay it all out on the table. Might this source also be suggesting there's truth behind "Page Six"'s report that Yigal cozies up to lady editors who can help his career?

Hudson News Can’t Handle Brüno’s Bare Rump

Sacha Baron Cohen poses in the buff as Brüno on the cover of the new GQ. However, this is too risqué for Hudson News's taste, so one outpost in Chicago has elected to treat the magazine like porn and sell it with a black "blinder" covering the bottom half of the page. At least efforts like this ought to keep a few people employed. [Folio]

With summer finally here, and the heat (and ever-present humidity) soon to follow, our makeup routines are about to go out the window. Instead of going completely barefaced, opt for a slick of color on the lips. It adds just enough polish, even when the city is sizzling. We gathered up 115 of our favorite lipsticks, glosses, balms, and stains in our latest Shop-A-Matic, and we asked Tia Williams of Shake Your Beauty to chime in with her favorite fifteen picks. From hot-pink lipsticks guaranteed to make notice-me lips to balms that leave only a hint of color behind, there’s a hue for even the most makeup-phobic. Plus, we gathered a group of volunteers to sample the shades so you can see how the color translates from tube to pout. Check out five of Tia's favorite shades.

Sir Philip Green and Simon Cowell Could Cook Up Some Fashion TV Shows Together

Sir Philip Green and Simon Cowell Could Cook Up Some Fashion TV Shows Together

Photo: Everett Bogue; Photos: WireImage, istockphoto

Simon Cowell and Sir Philip Green are going into business together. Apparently the two are practically best friends, and Sir Philip has even been advising Simon on his new American Idol contract with Fox. (Cowell has been offered a higher salary than Oprah, so being British isn't the only thing these two have in common.) In between these advising sessions and their mani-pedi parties, Simon and Sir Phil are also creating a global entertainment company together that will produce television content here and in the U.K. The company hasn't been named, and it's unclear how much cash Green will throw at the project. However it's a great springboard for a fashion venture, which could serve as a valuable marketing opportunity for Green's Topshop chain. A fashion-related show created by these two brilliant minds? It would have to be a model-competition series. Before a live studio audience. Can't you see it? Simon could tell someone they need to hit the treadmill every episode. Kate Moss could judge! (Or they could just title it Be Kate Moss and let Sienna Miller judge.) Marcus Schenkenberg could revive his career by hosting and then use his long-lost fame to land his own celebrity cable-news program! SiPhil (GreenCow?) will be unstoppable. Enjoy yours while it lasts, Tyra Banks.

Flutter’s Jill Golden Finds Inspiration in Dior-Clad Hipsters

Jill Golden from Flutter travels the world, gleaning inspiration from each city. And in so doing, she has made us seethe with envy. We only half kid. Flutter, named for Golden's passions in both travel and design, is a metal- and stone-based jewelry line with prices ranging from $95 to $365. Her fall collection, which is inspired by the Boulevard St. Germain in Paris, (specifically "the Dior-clad hipsters walking next to the Parisian ladies click clacking down the cobble stone streets") has a more grown-up feel than previous ones. "It is inspired by Paris, which is definitely the most sophisticated of the locations inspiring collections to date." (She's also based collections on Barcelona, Greece, Capri, and Buenos Aires.) Mixing raw cut stones (quartz, carnelian, amethyst, blue topaz) with gold, brass, silver, and gunmetal, Golden's combinations run between styles: from earthy boho to cool rocker. And that versatility has served her well: Brooke Shields has worn her pieces and Golden worked with Wren to design oversize pearl necklaces for fall '09. Flutter is carried in Sucre and Thistle & Clover, on Shopbop.com and of course, Flutternyc.com. Check out our favorite pieces from fall (hitting stores later this summer).

Parties You're Not Invited To

Delicatessen to Become Giant Model Lounge

Vans Girls doesn't want models to rough it this summer. Who does, really? So starting tomorrow, you may see a lot of willowy, leggy ladies going in and out of Delicatessen in Soho during the daytime. Through September 20 — or for the rest of the summer — models from "invited Top 10 Agencies" will get special "All Access Privilege Cards" to hang out in the model lounges. Vans is setting up in two of these in the restaurant's private-party spaces, so models can hang out between castings, mingle, change clothes, get their nails done, receive "surprise gifts," get massages, and eat food. And you thought they'd have to run around all summer getting sweaty, with chipped nail polish, alone, and worst of all, hungry. By the way, Vans, feel free to send us "surprise gifts" for the name-drop. That is, if you can find space in your hearts for bloggers who aren't six feet tall and 115 pounds.

Speculation that Vogue was slipping heightened when its February cover with Blake Lively came out — a choice viewed as down-market. [Forbes.com]

50 Cent Unveils His New Fragrance, ‘Power’

Is that coriander he's smelling?

Is that coriander he's smelling?Photo: Getty Images

Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson's new fragrance, Power by Fifty Cent, doesn't hit Macy's stores until November, but last night we got a preview whiff when the rapper turned beauty mogul unveiled the scent at a private event. The cologne is "a representation of a larger portion of my lifestyle," Fifty explained, adding that the scent's notes of lemon leaves, black pepper, and dark wood were his favorites, though he threw some coriander in there too, for kicks. "I sound like an expert, don't I?" Well, no, but at least that's four more ingredients than he knew last year! So who is his target audience? "Everyone human," he told us. Could he be more specific? Wannabe rappers? Moguls-in-training? Suburban mall rats? "Breathing," he clarified — as in people who breathe? And then we had our own powerful moment with Fifty: He grabbed our arms and rubbed them three times to (a) rub some Power off on us or (b) move us subtly in the opposite direction, diverting us away from his path. Either way, it was a power play. Considering he shoved us to the side with little more than an arm stroke, we're guessing his motives were rooted in option B. But when his arms left ours and we watched him dart away, we couldn't help but think he didn't smell half bad.

Recession Store-ies

We’re Kind of Excited About the New Hollister Store

But these attempts just might work.

But these attempts just might work.Photo: Courtesy of Hollister

Things keep getting worse for Abercrombie. The company just decided to close all 29 Ruehl stores, and may close 100 of its 354 Abercrombie & Fitch stores as leases expire over the next two years. Yet the company is hopeful its first New York City Hollister store, opening at the southeast corner of Broadway and Houston on July 16, will mark the start of a less depressing future. The performance of this new Hollister store is important because it will help the company determine how to expand globally over the next few years. (Current plans include an eleven-story Abercrombie & Fitch, to open in December in Tokyo, which will be absolutely terrifying if it's anything like the techno-blaring Fifth Avenue outpost.) Marketing efforts for the new Hollister store are so aggressive, one might call them desperate. The company is calling the store "The Epic Hollister Store.” They've launched a promotional website for it at HCORideTheWave.com, separate from the main Hollister site.

MTV to Air Audrina Patridge’s Spinoff

Audrina Patridge's Hills spinoff show, tentatively titled The Audrina Show, will air on MTV. The network would have been utterly foolish to let that piece of television gold, produced by Survivor's Mark Burnett, wander over to another network. Judging by its already-thrilling working title, this show should be epic. The Hills and The City don't provide enough blank stares to get us through the workweek. [News Briefs/EW]

The September Issue Inspires Fashion Movie Nights

The September Issue Inspires Fashion Movie Nights

Photo: Getty Images

There is a virtual PR force field around the hotly anticipated The September Issue. No further screenings have been scheduled (it won raves and an Excellence in Documentary award at Sundance and played to a packed house at MoMA), and promotional copies are embargoed. Those in the fashion industry used to getting what they want have stooped to bootlegging. A cadre of editors and designers are in possession of the coveted gem, resulting in fashion screening parties. The movie nights are rumored to have popped up in New York, Paris, and a hotel in Moscow.

The verdict? “LOVE!” said one editor who wishes to remain nameless for fear of being sued over her watermarked copy. “I can quote it scene by scene.” But before you start hunting for a download, be warned. “Anything out there is illegal,” says Alana McElroy, a publicist for the film. Alas, the unconnected will just have to wait until the film's September release.

Patricia Field to Pull Out of the Sex and the City Sequel?

The sequel to the Sex and the City movie begins filming pretty soon, but Grazia is suggesting Patricia Field might not stay on as stylist. Apparently Sarah Jessica Parker has decided to transform Carrie from fashionista to recessionista, and this does not sit well with her. "I don't use the recession as a reference for my creativity," Pat said. Oh, Pat. Carrie could easily make her typical wacky outfits with Gap cardigans, Payless jelly shoes, and lamé bodysuits from American Apparel. [Grazia]

Inevitable Things

Jennifer Lopez Will Temporarily Spare the U.S. Her Clothing Line

Jennifer Lopez Will Temporarily Spare the U.S. Her Clothing Line

Photo: Getty Images

Jennifer Lopez has decided to halt production of her Sweetface clothing line. Though Lopez was a pioneer in the celebrity clothing business, her hardly storied design career has been turbulent and, well, kind of sad. Try to suppress your shock. In 2001, she launched JLO as one of the first celebrity fashion lines. Remember her shows at New York Fashion Week? Despite the initial hype, the industry didn't take her as a serious designer, and the line never attained the success of, say, Gwen Stefani's L.A.M.B. label. (Hell, we practically forgot she had a line until today's news.) In 2007, Lopez finally decided to close JLO in the U.S. and distribute it only in other countries. But she thought America wanted more apparel by her, so she launched justsweet, which closed after only a few seasons at retail. If you find all this confusing and hard to keep track of, then you understand the main problem with the Lopez brand.

But stay with us! The story continues. »
